Plunky & Oneness of Juju - Download for radio special!!! Download the show here: http://wrir.org/x/modules...oryid=9600
---- Anyone hip to Plunky & Oneness of Juju? Those who are not deep Funk heads will definitely know Plunky's recent single Drop if they listen to the Michael Baisden Show, because it gets play every day right now. His recent album Drive even earned him a Grammy nomination. But to Funk fans, Plunky is the man behind the Oneness of Juju, one of the greatest Afro-Funk-Jazz bands ever. The cult song African Rhythms has been sampled many times, and the group's sound is very Coltranesque with a bit of Fela Kuti. Plunky and Oneness of Juju are from Richmond, VA, where I live and where we have our weekly radio show Midnight Soulstice. Plunky will join us live in the studio this Friday, April 17th, for two hours to talk about his music and play much of it. You can tune in from 11 pm – 1 am and listen online at www.wrir.org Plunky isn't our first guest on Midnight Soulstice – in recent months we've had Fred Wesley, Leroy Hutson, The New Birth, Mandrill, RAMP, Lonnie Liston Smith and Marva Whitney, with many more to come. For downloads for our archived shows go visit http://wrir.org/x/modules...ytopic=142 or check us out on MySpace www.myspace.com/midnightsoulstice But now about Plunky ... anyone into him or is he too underground for the org? The man has released more than 50 albums, most of the on his own Soul Fire label, and most are pretty hard to find these days ... ^ Good selections. It's amazing how Plunky has re-invented himself in recent years. His latest single is really going well, making it on Michael Baisden's playlist - that's an actual commercial success. Good for Plunky. Ironically, in Europe, all his fans want to hear is the Oneness of Juju material. | |

Graycap23 said: That is not funk.....is there a point here? African Rhythms is Funk. Every way but loose is Funk. Drop is Funk. Oneness of Juju released much heavy Funk. But the earlier material is more Jazz. I still put the Funk in the title of this thread, so it catches people's attention. it worked for you, didn't it? Here, take this pill for your headache. You know how they say, the bigger the headache, the bigger the pill. | |

Then, they both influenced each other, 'cause the Funk is Universal. "He's a musician's musician..." | |

To be fair, Gray later edited his post ... he was referring to the Mint Condition clip that I posted. I used that clip so he can mellow out from the headache Plunky has given him. I gotta tell Plunky that story tonight .. "Dude, this guy listened to your music today and it gave him a headache. It's the same guy who believes that James Brown lost it when he recorded Payback." I know, I'm a bit feisty today. [Edited 4/17/09 12:12pm] | |

Because you said Oneness Of Juju gave you a headache, so he calmed you with the only band you consistently praise. I was surprised you wouldn't appreciate a Plunky feature, so I had to laugh. | |

Why would someone talking about Funk post a Mint Condition ballad? Did I miss something? Yeah, I've explained it a few times already. Since Plunky's music gave you a headache, I dropped a ballad by the band you love so much, so you can mellow out. Get it now? Geeez. | |

Doesn't change the fact though that Oneness of Juju is one of the heaviest acts in Afro-Funk/Jazz. Some really deep shit. But that's okay, you got Mint Condition. I find them boring, lame and uninteresting. Their Funk is so stale and clean cut, it puts me to sleep. How can you call it Funk if it's clean? That's an oxymoron. In the end, it's all about taste. | |
