Although I understand the reporter's point about Thriller making leaps into the cross over market, he is ill-informed about the cross over success of "Little Red Corvette", and how that pulled in a lot of white listeners. It was just rock/pop enough for that audience. White kids wouldn't have known about "DMSR" or "Do Me Baby" or "Uptown", had it not been for that pointed and purposeful cross over of LRC. Purple Rain road the coat tails of that, quite successfully.

Tell that to the 02 arena which sold out 50 concerts for MJ in the span of a few hours. This, after 10 shows were announced and sold out in record time, and 40 more shows added through next February.

but you don't understand, MJ is a genius. anybody who can make a career out of doing the same dance moves for 20 is amazing. Prince could never achieve something like that

Oh, please. Was Michael Jackson given complete creative control on the first contract he ever signed?

I didn't think so.

He hasn't performed those concerts yet. Has he?

Its not crazy and MJ changed the music industry forever (but not for the better). Thriller was huge but Prince didnt need MJ. Prince was already a darling of the white rock establishment that ran MTV at the time. It could be said that Prince helped MTV see that black "pop" could sell and attract viewers.

Its a chicken-egg question perhaps could be answered by the people who where there but I suspect it happened simultaneously. The two were not really connected as "rivals" until purple rain.

to be honest, i've not read the article and don't feel i need to.

I'm sure 'Off The Wall' was pretty much a landmark album in terms of its sound and it's ability to crossover to white audiences, sure it wasn't Thriller (released in December 82 in case you don't know) but i'm pretty sure it's sales at the time weren't exclusively to black people.

Motown25, the Video's etc propelled Thrillers freak crossover status. Prince was crossing over a little with the 1999 album around the same time, but outside the States (which is not the majority of the World, lest some folk forget), not many white folk were getting Prince til Purple Rain in '84. But by then the press had jumped on the fact he was a little black guy that wore mascara and eyeliner, just like MJ!, hey a rival! and here we are, zillions of years later still going on like it's relevant! lol

That's my take. and i believe it's fact.

But artists before them both paved the way, and that's the main thing.

Prince made it his way and continues to do so while Michael has done it his way. Both are great at their craft. Now mentally, its a totally different matter. As strange Prince might have been over the years; Michael has truly been living "Off the Wall".

Both entertainers are incredible in what they did and what they are doing. There's no need for comparisons, they are way too different from each other.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

If it were true, it would be ironic, considering MJ is now a white woman. But I don't think it's true.

I think the article speaks the truth.

Prince has a lot to thank MJ 4.

THIS IS IT! THIS IS IT! THIS IS IT!

The king is back.

Since the O2 news I've not listened to much of anything but the true King Of Pop.

I was excited by the new Prince stuff but THIS IS IT! totally eclipsed it.
