Name some musical genuises

Prince, Ray, Elton, Stevie, etc? Can you name some you consider on the level of genuis?

- What makes one a musical genuis? Do you have to play an instrument to be considered one? What about the ladies? Are Lady Day and Ella considered genuises?

Well, let's start with the obvious

1. Michael
2. Prince
3. Quincy
4. Ray Charles
5. Ella
6. Nina Simone
7. Herbie Hancock
8. Carlos Santana
9. Donald Fagen
10. Marvin Gaye

Those are my choices, not in any particular order.

Yes, I would put Ms. Holiday, Ms. Fitzgerald and Ms. Vaughan on that list. Actually Billie Holiday was a songwriter and an arranger. I get the suspicion's in her instance her addictions may have limited her output. That being said:

Duke Ellington
Louis Armstrong
Miles Davis
Kenny Dorham
Earl Garner
Thelonious Monk
Bud Powell
Wes Montgomery
Charlie Parker
John Lewis of MJQ
Fats Waller
Curtis Mayfield
Joni Mitchell
Robert Johnson
Muddy Waters
George/Ira Gershwin
Billy Preston
The Isley Brothers.
Leonard Bernstein

Composers from the Great American Songbook:
Rogers and Hart
Rogers and Hammerstein
Cole Porter
Johnny Mercer
Hoagy Carmichael
Jerome Kern
Irvin Berlin

To me a voice is an instrument that's why Ella is a genius. The way she used her voice. Brilliant. I pretty much agree with everyone named here, I have to add NAT King Cole.

I completely agree which is why even if people don't agree that Michael is a genius as far as his composition and songwriting skills go, his voice and the way he used it alone puts him in this league

After watching 60 Minutes last night, I definitely have to add this lady.

I like country music, but don't listen to a lot of it, but this lady is genius in her songwriting abilities.

Another I would have to add (that doesn't get mentioned much) is

He is a songwriter that doesn't get mentioned much here, but he is a genius when it comes to writing.

mad Dammit!! I didn't know about the 60 minutes interview. I like Ms. Parton too and she's never gotten the praise nor the accolades she deserves. Kristofferson, Cash, Nelson, and Jennings were always applauded for their writing but Parton for some reason has been left out of the loop.

Though, it appears she doesn't give a damn. lol That's the things I like about her; she knows she's gifted and goes about her business. I think her music of the last 15 years has been short of brilliant. It's unforunate country radio thinks her time has come and gone.
