Startling Stat: First Quarter Totally Platinum-Free... Startling stats continue to roll in on the quickly-declining CD. The latest, unearthed by Hits Magazine, is that the first quarter was completely devoid of a platinum release. That is, no album specifically released during the first quarter has scored sales of one million, specifically in the United States. Additionally, only 39 releases scored first week sales north of 25,000. On a broader level, year-over-year album sales are sharply down again, in the mid-teens percentages. Of course, CDs have always been the most obvious casualty of a massively disrupted market, though the engine is getting closer to empty. Now, the question is whether the recent exits of Circuit City, Virgin Megastores, and Borders will have an even deeper impact on sales during future quarters. In the recent quarter, top-ranked CDs were frequently sub-100,000, with the notable exception of U2's No Line on the Horizon. | |

In all fairness U2 has moved over a million in the states, the thing that broke it up was the various edtions of its availability which were tracked differently and carried different catalog numbers, a rule not often followed. And FINALLY an article notes the absence of RETAIL and stores as the main reason for the decline, labels have forced out the stores, alot of people dont want digital so they either find things used, (by the way AMAZON is actually up in sales of music) or they just dont buy music, music is not an important thing to peoples lives anymore, those days aare done for most. I'm telling you guys,"gold" is the new platinum Artists and record labels are gonna have to lower their expectations and work hard just to reach gold status.We won't see too many platinum+ CDs in the future. | |
