Dusty Springfield - "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" Today would have been her 70th birthday. Dionne Warwick's version of this tune is one of my favorite recordings, but this one also brings a little tear to my eye. One of the best tunes in the Bacharach/David catalog.

I'm going to totally embarrass myself now and say that the first time I ever heard this song was when the White Stripes covered it a few years ago.
Since then I've gotten two Dusty comps (Ultimate Collection and Complete A and B Sides 1963-1970) and all five of Dusty's U.K. albums from the 60s (the first four just this past month with 1970's Brand New Me arriving in the mail any day now) AND Dusty's Live at The BBC DVD. So far I love it ALL. Maybe I'll have a Dusty party when I go home tonight in honor of her birthday.

No need to hide. I actually like the White Stripes cover. Of course - to my ears anyway - it doesn't have the emotional wallop of the other versions I mentioned, but I do like it.

I still haven't heard Dionne's version. I'm betting I'd totally fall in love with a comp of Dionne's collaborations with Burt Bacharach and Hal David. I need to investigate...

Her version is mysteriously absent from youtube. All of Dionne's 60s album as worth getting, but you can start with these two compilations: The Dionne Warwick Collection: Her All-Time Greatest Hits Hidden Gems: The Best of Dionne Warwick, Vol. 2 Perfect compilations!

I listened to samples of the first one including "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" on iTunes--all good stuff. Too bad about that album cover though.

Yeah, that dress has her looking like Wilma Flintstone.

One of my top three favorite Dusty songs, I Only Want To Be With You...
...I actually heard for the first time when SamFox covered it: I can't believe I used to like that remake. It hurts my ears now. I was just a teen in the 80s and clearly didn't know anything.

Another favorite early single from Dusty:
I love the dancers in the video.
