Non-label recording idea - Jill Sobule Did it NOT a JOKE. Cool idea for artists trying to get enough support behind an album, ask the fans for the cash to make it! Last January, she started her effort to raise $75k to cover the expenses of creating and distributing her new CD. Fund-raising is done, CD out in April, She accomplished just that by promising different levels of gifts. Honestly, i think this is brilliant.
* $10 - Unpolished Rock (but with potential) Level: A free digital download of the album, when it's released. * $25 - Polished Rock Level: An advance copy of the CD. Weeks before the masses. * $50 - Pewter Level: An advance copy and a "Thank You" on the CD. * $100 - Copper Level: All the above, plus a T-shirt saying you're a junior executive producer on the album. * $200 - Bronze Level: Free admission to my shows for 2008. * $250 - Silver Level: All the above, plus a membership to the "Secret Society Producer's Club," which means you'll get a secret password to a website where I'll post some rough tracks, or... something worthwhile. * $500 - Gold Level: This is where it gets good! At the end of my CD, I'll do a fun instrumental track where I'll mention your name and maybe rhyme with it. And if you don't want your name used, you can give me a loved one's instead. What a great gift! * $750 - Gold Doubloons Level: Exactly like the gold level, but you give me more money. * $1,000 - Platinum Level: How would you like to have a theme song written for you? I'll have a song you can put on your answering machine and show off. Again, this could be a gift. * $2,500 - Emerald Level: Mentioned as an executive producer of the album -- whoop-di-doo! * $5,000 — Diamond Level: I will come and do a house concert for you. Invite your friends, serve some drinks, bring me out and I sing. Actually, this level is a smart choice economically. I've played many house concerts where the host has charged his guests and made his money back. I'd go for this if I were you. * $10,000 - Weapons-Grade Plutonium Level: You get to come and sing on my CD. Don't worry if you can't sing - we can fix that on our end. Also, you can always play the cowbell.

Read an interview on cnn.com. Someone from the U.K. did give 10K directly to her and they did meet and sing as promised.
I love people who think and do the unconventional....

That looks very interesting. I would hope that she gets some media attentioon from it....It's an original and funny concept for bucking the system while also interacting with fans. Yeah, she probably won't. Maybe she should have ten kids at once...than she'll be on CNN's "Showbiz Tonight" every night!

The Todd Rundgren connection was deeper than I thought...
Jill Sobule (born January 16, 1965 in Denver, Colorado) is an American singer-songwriter best known for the 1995 single "I Kissed a Girl", and "Supermodel" from the soundtrack of the 1995 film Clueless. Sobule's debut album Things Here Are Different was released in 1990. Though produced by pop legend Todd Rundgren, the album failed to sell. During this period a follow-up record was produced by British New Wave rocker Joe Jackson but Sobule was dropped from her label and the second record was never released. It was five years before Sobule landed another recording contract. ...http://en.wikipedia.org/w...ill_Sobule 2008 Radio interview here: http://www.blogtalkradio....l%20Sobule tA Tribal Disorder

I read about this at CNN.com this morning. It sorta reminds me of sellaband.com and theAudience is right - she's not the first recording artist to have their fans "pay" for the album. Although I think 75 G's to produce a pop record these days is complete foolishness and an utter waste of money, I wish her and like minded artists the best.
