Buying used cds vs.new cds

Today, I went to a music store, and managed to get such a good deal for 6 used cds.

I bought Mariah Carey-Daydream for $3.99, Mariah Carey-Emotions for $3.99, Mariah Carey Self-titled $4.99, Madonna- Something to Remember ($4.99), Madonna- Like a Prayer for $4.99, and Madonna-Ray of Light for $6.99. I ended up getting two of the cds free because of a special deal. My total bill was about $22.00, so overall I was really pleased. All of them were in excellent condition.

Imagine how much money you would have paid had you just bought a brand new cd instead? The new cd for Like a Prayer was going for $15.00 in the same store. smile

I saved a lot of money today.

Does anyone else prefer buying used cds over new cds? In a way, I think its much better to by a used CD for $3.99 (if its in good condition), and ripping those songs on your computer ( and then loading them onto your MP3 player), over buying them on Itunes, where you're paying more money per song from an album.

Anxiety

when i have the time to dig, i like to shop for used CDs. when i lived in chicago, i could always find the latest releases i wanted in the used bins - people either would sell their advance copies, or...well, i dunno HOW some of those new releases got into the used bin so fast, but i sure didn't mind it. lol

these days, i live elsewhere and i don't have the same kind of time or resources to hunt down new music for cheap. plus, i'm starting to collect as much music via mp3 as i do on CD, so there's that change too. no such thing as a "used mp3", sadly. lol

i have had to replace alot of stuff recently cd and dvd wise, and amazon is the best for USED stuff, actually at this point its the only music source that is showing profit, not even iTunes can say that. But i have never had one issue with a Used cd, and gotten ALOT of cds for 1cent up to 3-4 bucks

I buy used CDs & LPs all the time.

Do I have issues with them?

Sure!

Occasionally I do... nod

but I just laugh it off whenever I hear a scratch on an old record or something. lol

I know that's to be expected with such items.

Ah well, what can ya do? shrug

Anyways, you can always fix a scratched LP....and sometimes if the needle skips it's not always a scratch, just some scuff marks or something.

A few sprays of record cleaner usually solves that problem....or just some water and a damp cloth.

Yep, I buy used CDs. I usually buy used CDs that weren't re-released or are no longer in-print. Some new CDs (both new releases & digitally remastered ones) are cheaper online compared to i-Tunes and I still prefer CDs, cassettes etc. to a digital format. Although Amazon in the UK ocassionally have new mp3 albums priced for £3 which is good.

I buy both and on rare occasions vinyl...music that's out of print or wasn't released. I buy most of all my music via digital download nowadays. Anxiety correct, Chicago's has some great music shops where you can find bargains on Cd's new/used. I very seldom purchase a new Cd for 9 bucks and all my used Cd's are $5 dollars and under. Amazon and eBay are a last resort.... I still prefer to purchase music on the spot, I want it right NOW. smile

I get some kind of perverse pleasure out of buying 2nd hand CDs. It's kinda like legalised piracy. cool

....@ least that's what it feels like @ the time! eek

It really depends on price. Simple as that for me. I have a lot of used Cds, but likely the majority is new

With so many CDs out of print, this is basically the only option a lot of the time. Great for timely compilations which seem to only be marketed one cycle then lost forever.
I regularly shop for used music. Used vinyl is actually a cheaper option if you enjoy more common titles.

Every other weekend I used to take my son into Boston to go to the Used Music Stores. I totally love them. My son would look for Simple Plan and Jonas Brothers while I was looking for Cyndi Lauper and Culture Club. We always found rare and cool stuff. Wether it be on vinyl or CD, its been a blast. Many of the stores are gone. I think there's only 2 used stores left in Boston when there used to be about 9 or so that I would frequent all the time. Oh well. As for the "Digital" crap. I have fan made mixes and stuff like that, but I prefer a hard copy any day over a mp3

I buy rare out-of-print CDs on eBay; rip them to FLAC and scan the covers; then sell them back on eBay for much the same price I paid originally. It's a win/win situation. lol

The last time I did this was with Grace Jones' Fame album: only ever released on CD in the late nineties, on an Island Records budget imprint in Germany and Australia. I think I paid £35.00 for it and then sold it on at a slight loss; maybe £30.00.

I treat eBay as a huge CD rental service now.

I buy them from Amazon sometimes and search for the cheapest price from sellers I trust. I have never had a problem with any of my purchases (aside from musical taste LOL).

I usually only do this when I feel like spending $40-$50 at a time. I load up and have them shipped at the same time.

1DirXtion: I agree, I like to have the physical CD in my collection. Digital has not replaced physical for me, but it does have a place in my music. At the very least, digital/portable copies keep the physical ones pristine . . .

Used CDs all the way. My favorite place to get used CDs and DVDs is Secondspin.com; great service, great deals, great prices, and no hassle if the CD is damaged. If I can't find what I want on there, then I go to Amazon.com and for really, really rare stuff, Gemm.com...but they are pretty pricey on some things.

I totally believe in buying used cds (and sometimes dvds as well) from Amazon.com or Ebay whenever it suits me. The way I look at is, you buy a brand new cd, pay regular price for it, and as soon as you open it and play it, that new cd becomes used. So I have no qualms about buying used because even the new cds are gonna become "used" much sooner than later. Course, I always make sure the used dvds or cds are in good condition--dont want one full of scratches lol. As a matter of fact, I bought a used copy of season one of Ugly Betty on dvd from my local video store for only $10, and it plays great...As long as it plays great and doesnt skip or freeze up on me, used is a great way to go! smile

That's pretty much the only route I go. I've never had issues with used CDs and I've been buying them either online or offline for about 10 years now.
