It sucks. Dude is just jumping on wack trends. Its a shame to see legends like himself, Lionel Ritchie, etc. jumping on trends and only adding forgettable garbage to their discography.

I'm embarrassed by this cd. Pissed me off that I waste my money on this nonsense. It won't happen again.

I liked about 3 or 4 songs. Nothing to rave about, though. His last album was really good. R. Kelly helped him pick the right writers/producers to fit Charlie. Too bad this didn't happen this time around.

I almost fell into the trap too but i listened before purchasing
and i said hell to the naw. His bridging the gap cd of 2000 was
real good even better than first name charlie last name wilson.
This uncle charlie thing is utter garbage. The one single there goes my
baby is cool. I guess we shouldn't be surprised when uncle charlie reduces
himself to working with the likes of tpain and jamie foxx who is equally
ridiculous these days.

He's got a couple of decent tracks but this is not classic Charlie Wilson. Its Charlie does 2009. I think "There Goes My Baby" is pretty decent, although it sounds like the producer ripped off an Angie Stone track. "Shawty Come Back" is actually a nice modernization of "Baby Come Back". I really hated to hear him using autotune. That was invented for people who CAN'T sing. "Let It Out" sounds like "Early In The Morning" meets "Sexyback". "Love, Love, Love" sounds like Charlie picked up a track that Usher turned down. "What You Do To Me" sounds like some Donnell Jones meets Ne-Yo. "Thinking Of You" is another track where it sounds like he took one of his old bass lines and "housed" the track. "Homeless" is Charlie does R. Kelly. That track he did with Jamie - "Supersexxy" - worst track on the CD.
I have mixed feelings on the whole record. On the one hand, there's a lot of derivatives of current songs and musically its really dumbed down compared to his normal standard. On the other hand, Charlie can sang his ass off! Damn, that brotha sounds good. Charlie is one of those dudes like Ron Isley who has never left the industry. He's sang background on a lot of Snoop's tracks as side work and I'm sure he's ghost written some stuff for a couple of artists. If you listen closely to "That Girl" with Snoop and Pharrell, you can hear him singing the hook. Pharrell just came in and sang over his part and they mixed Charlie low in the mix. Dude stays current, so I can't blame him for doing what he did with this record but he basically shunned his fan base for the sake of sounding current. Or, you could look at it like "he's showin' them young bucks how to really sing" because the vocals on this record are top notch. I guess if Bobby and Snoop can "go country" the Charlie can "go contemporary". There isn't a hint of real GAP funk on this record. I wouldn't recommend it to any GAP Band fans.

What's the general consensus on the "Last Name Wilson" album?

I was gonna pick it up, but the sticker saying "Collaborations from Will.I.Am et al" put me off.

Yeah those singers are one of a kind, although Skip Martin is the leadsinger and trumpet-player for the Dazz Band,
and he has been shifting places through the years by performing and recording solo, as well for Kool & The Gang.

I've listened to this CD a couple of more times since I wrote what I did before.
I see exactly what Charlie was doing now. He took the "feel" of a lot of the contemporary singers' styles and showed what it would sound like with a "real" singer singing the songs. He did R. Kelly, The Dream, Usher, Ne-Yo, T-Pain, a little Donnell Jones and a couple of other vocalists. Even though the songs are contemporary R&B, the arrangements are pretty good overall. They aren't just thrown together. In my opinion, its a good record for the current generation. Most of them probably won't listen to classic GAP Band so this is probably the best route to expose them to real R&B singing - by educating them through the sounds they are used to. I think its a pretty good move on Charlie's part. He gets to stay relevant longer and he ups the bar for the young bucks at the same time.

Well, R. was pretty busy with at trial when Charlie was getting this one together. It kept getting pushed back, now I see why. lol

The more I listen to it, I feel the same way. He did a really good job of capturing what's "hot" now in terms of style, but some of the songs are not that good to me. I don't care for Homeless or the lead single, Supa Sexy. I've heard about 2 or 3 different versions of these songs and none of them are good. Now, I have fallen in love with "Let It Out" (which leaked back in November or December) and Shawty Come Back. Those songs are really good.

Well, if it comes up in shuffle while playing the mp3 player, I'll listen, but I won't go out of my way to dust off the cd (unless I have 2 use it for something else).

If you don't like it, take it back and say something's wrong with it, exchange it, take the unopened one back for your money back.

I know they give u the same title. Once you exchange it, take the new unopened cd to another store and get ur money back. If not, u can always sell it on Amazon or Ebay.
