30 Years Later BERLIN are still ahead of the times.... The origins of BERLIN stretch even further, but the version that clicked, was formed 30 years ago, and was then a trend setter, and still today, recording artists are still trailing far behind to even be as cutting edge as BERLIN were for that day.
The creative force came from Teri Nunn and John Crawford, as they created a sound, a movement coming from the LA clubs that even Today would and is being copied everywhere you look, especially with this new found love of Dance music in the pop fold. Comparisons were none back in Berlin's day, because they were the pioneers, they werent following, what they were doing was not done yet. They were rising out of the ashes of the Disco world, the punk world, and were pushing boundaries so far they could not be classified. Berlin were coming of age at a time that Music Video was being born, and they rode it, creating VIDEO ALBUMS (before Beyonce sorry B) and extended club mixes and EP's all things that are taboo today since the demise of the "ideas" of music. Berlin had one thing that also seperated them from others, a FUCK YOU attitude Lead Singer, that could blow anyone vocalist away and still can to this day, the lady barely 5'2 had a powerhouse vocal strength and control, that todays new jacks should take note of. Albums like Fascination,Pleasur Victim,Love Life were classics to this day. Pleasure Victim's singles of "The Metro" "masquerade" and "Sex IM A.." are unmatched to this day for their dark sound that captured the very clubs they were ruling. Berlin's only wrong step was their step into the limelight, "take my breath away" was the bullet in the brain of a band that was going in different directions already, Teri leaning more dance, John leaning more rock, labels telling them to fire each other, and what ended up was their break up in 1988 with the track "Blowing Sky High" which to this day, John tells me he has no clue what it was about, he just knows that Terri tore the vocals up in one-take, bet no vocalist can do that shit now! Berlin still exist today with Teri at the helm but with a new backing band that is once again cutting edge, John, has continued to record on his own from a studio in LA doing the indie thing, like it was early on.... John told me that they were not even speaking at that point, the label had stepped in and gotten rid of band members, there were a TON of studio musicians playing on the record, including, Ted Nugent on 2 tracks. John did tell me that there were some great moments recording this record, but alot of bitterness existed. Yep, Terri has definitely left her influence. The one above is the one I find the most. I can only hope that Lady Gaga becomes as much a part of this generation as the inlfluence TN and DB had in the 80's. I sure miss hearing them and seeing their videos.... | |

I love Terri Nunn but I'm glad she lost out to Carrie Fisher in the Star Wars auditions for Princess Leia. If Terri had gotten the part, we never would have gotten to read (or watch) Postcards from the Edge, and Terri probably wouldn't have recorded "Sex (I'm a)" with Berlin. Imagine what a bleak world that could have been! | |
