biggrin The Emperor of the Bass! It's funny--like guitarist Pat Metheny, I kinda think of Jaco as a Composer First, one who happened to play the Hell outta the bass( and revoulutionized Jazz electric bass in the process)...

For example, Three Views of a Secret has always been my favorite Jaco tune--and it's funny that from a bass playing perspective it's more of a supportive bassline, and an anchor for the band, rather than a big showcase for the bass....

Jaco Pastorius w/ Toots Thielemans and the Word of Mouth Band (from "Live In Japan")- "Three Views Of A Secret"

I have so much respect for Jaco - his playing and contributions to music. However, there are so many great and influential players that it has always been hard for me to singularly label him with the emperor/king, be-all/end-all crown that so many people bestow upon him. I am just happy that he left the body of work that he did, because his music will continue to inspire new bassists/musicians long after we all are gone. bow

You've got some great tunes on here. We have some of the same ones. I had to give a head nod to you for listing a long-time favorite of mine - Funkanova! I love that song. My sister just gave me the "New Jersey Deep" version of it by Black Science Orchestra from Defected in the House - Miami 2007, and I was bumpin' it last week.

One of my fave Pastorius basslines...

...Opus Pocus (includes one of his signature groove licks)

And what he does to Teen Town on Weather Report's 8:30 album is what I like to call Jaco Gone Berserk.
He even gives Kool & The Gang's Love The Life You Live a nod within his frenzied playing.

I was initially a bit disappointed because Pino Palladino (another Bass Beast) did the Japan leg of the tour and was scheduled to do some of the West coast dates. However, Randy held the spot down very well.

Did a review of the concerts that I saw here:

Does anyone listen to Saturnino? I only heard about him about two years ago. He doesn't seem to be that well known outside of Europe. The only song I that I had ever heard from him was "Blame It On the Bass Line." I remember hearing Meshell say that she digs him.

Not hip to him. Video is sputtering at the moment.
Looks like a Tele-style instrument.

Here's a newer cat you may or may not have heard of...

He's currently playing with Greg Howe and can be heard on...
