What is the big deal about playing instruments? i'm sorry but I am so sick of people on here yapping about playing instruments. Why do some people think artist who play instruments are more talented than artist who don't. why are only people who play instruments allowed to be called geniuses. Playing an instrument is not that big a deal, ANYBODY can learn how to play an instrument expertly if they practice hard enough. I think think being able to sing is much more impressive than playing an instrument. singing is Natural and the voice is the most impressive instrument I just want to know why people on here make a big deal about playing instruments but look down on singers with beautiful voices and just call them puppets or whatever? Playing an instrument is a big deal if you are a professional and are
good at it. Some people can pick up an instrument but may suck at it. Trust me. Now you are more impressed by people that can sing. Well dude i'll tell you what is even more impressive a person that can play the damn instrument and sing. You mean to tell me that these american idol puppets are more impressive than stevie wonder, teena marie, micheal cooper, felton pilate, george duke, prince, etc. I can go on and on. Name me one singer especially current that is more impressive than these people. Please spare me the mary j. blige/keyshia cole shit. Good luck. Don't laugh at my funk

i never said playing an instrument is not important at all ( and i love james jamerson) i said someone who plays an instrument is not more talented than someone who just sings and it's true. for instance james jamerson( who didn't sing) is not more talented than luther vandross . also i don't think a person who plays an instrument and sings is more talented than someone who just sings, Its a argument of quality over quantity thing. for instance luther vandross in my opinion is more talented than prince. because of his beautiful voice, even though luther may not have wrote many/any of his songs, his voice was a gift from god and i doubt he had to learn how to sing. just because someone can do more things than another artist does not mean they are more talented. and i think being able to make music naturally, meaning with your body is more impressive. its a matter of opinion

they are separate talents that are both deserving of praise and respect. if you can do both, hey, good, you're multi-talented.
the one that bugs me are when people praise singer-songwriters as the only true "artists" and you get a lot of that around here (and in general). i'd much rather someone who can's sing worth shit just stick to writing music instead of having to suffer through hearing them try to sing. likewise, i'd prefer that people with amzing vocal talents that can't write a verse, chorus or even string together 3 notes that sound good together to just stop trying to force it for credibility.

You do know luther played piano and produced a lot of his music as well as for other artists like aretha franklin, dionne warwick, and cheryl lynn. I also think the battle you are trying to pick is failing because from what i read on the org most people agree without regard as to whether the artist plays an instrument or not is that the music of 60's through the 80's is better than the majority of music you hear now because you actually had a producer that was really a producer that carefully crafted the songwriters and musicians for the project versus today's producer that just put some lame ass drum beat on tape and ask today's artist to sing some stupid shit over it umm like timberland. Right, and comparing '60s artists and today's artists, I rather hear Mary Wells than Nicole Shamamashamwow or whatever her name is. People actually used their voice as instruments back then, they were compared with instruments if they were REALLY good. Plus the producers back then knew how to direct the singer and the singer took it home, lol. I'm actually tired of hearing artists singing LOUD over "hip-hop beats", it's getting real redundant now. As far as I'm concerned, the human voice, is indeed an instrument. If you can do either it's like having a super power. Also it's quite common for an established singer to be competent on piano or guitar, though some would rather sing than play. One ofthe most difficult things in music is to do both: sing and play. test

Hi all,
This is a particularly harsh response to a valid question/point. My feelings are this: 1. The ability to sing in a truly beautiful way is stunning. For one, I was blown away when I heard J. Buckley's two full octaves live and un-aided. Oh, and the San Francisco Opera... 2. I've been equally floored by excellent musicianship. There are many to name here. 3. Art knocks me out...photography, sculpture, drawing, painting,et al. Don't we all have the capacity to appreciate a variety of media? Ps. I also love stripped three chord punk (its all good)
