I think people forget the great stuff that artists like Elton,Mccartney did in the 80's just because of their past glories [Edited 3/17/09 6:44am] Yeah, McCartney had some excellent work in the 80s - Tug of War and Flowers in the Dirt are among my 2 favorite McCartney solo albums of his career. And i agree with the Elton comment. I don't think he had one album that was consistent all the way thru in the 80s (apart perhaps from Too Low For Zero), but he certainly had a string of classic songs that decade. I dont think many artists from the 70s or 60s escaped the 80s unscathed. Bowie, Joni mitchell, macca, Stevie W, The Rolling Stones, Elton - all lost their way at various points in the 80's. | |

Band On The Run (1973) Tug Of War (1982) Flaming Pie (1997) Memory Almost Full (2007) Band On the Run is perfect, Tug Of War, well, it's good, but IF (but he didn't) have written the Jacksons songs and So Bad yet, and have included those it would have been an AMAZING album: "Tug of War" – 4:22 "Take It Away" – 4:14 "Somebody Who Cares" – 3:19 "What's That You're Doing?" "Here Today" – 2:27 "Ballroom Dancing "The Pound Is Sinking" – 2:54 "The Man "Get It" – 2:29 "Say Say Say "So Bad" "Ebony and Ivory" Flaming Pie has its flaws, but the songs that are good are REALLY GOOD, imo, Beatles-niveau. Heaven On A Sunday, Someday, Little Willow and others are perfect. Memory Almost Full is an album where I can listen to every track but a TOTAL highlight that could stand in his catalogue. But Dance Tonight is fun, My Ever Present past is just cool... They're all excellent albums - although the Pipes Of Peace cuts aren't good enough.Id argue he's released more than one album per decade. For me its: Ram (1971) - a brilliant record, letdown by its lack of hit songs, but its as raw and edgy as McCartney got in the 70s. He poured all his hurt from the Beatles into this album. Too Many people is the standout on this album for me. Flowers In The Dirt (1989) His collaborations with Elvis Costello shone, but there were other great tracks on there too. It was the album that propelled him back into the live arena, and alot of the songs from this album sounded great live. I love My Brave Face, That Day Is Done, Put It There, & Figure of 8. Flaming Pie (1997) I loved Young Boy as a lead off, and Beautiful Night is a song i wish he would revisit live as i love its arrangement. I think that some of the record suffered from lack of having any band input, and its alos a blatant attempt to cash in on the current wave of beatles nostalgia created by the anthology projects. That said with songs as good as Calico Skies, little willow & The Song We Were Singin what does it matter. Driving Rain (2001) - I loved this record when it came out. Admittedly ive not listened to it for a number of yearsm, but its a solild album with numerous highlights. Great ballads like From A Lover to a Friend, & Your Loving Flame, and his new touring band gave the record a raw edge. Lonesome Road is dripping with angst over Linda, and Rinse The Raindrops is as raw asive heard him since Helter Skelter. It was the last record of his i was really into. [Edited 3/16/09 11:03am] Cracking selection. I also love Band on the Run and the first album. Every Night from that is a beauty. There are three sides to every story. Macca has written some of the most beloved and succesful songs ever, I consider him as one of the best white male singers of his most succesful years a talented multi-instrumentalists and he comes across as some really down-to-earth person. I think he has his evil sides as well, but he never caused a real scandal (the drug stories are no scandals imo). PLUS his material is relatively consistent. He had his ups and downs, but he had this during the Beatles years as well! In 1964 he wrote great stuff (Can't Buy Me Love, Things We Said Today, Yesterday), but he also wrote some fillers like One And One Is Two, From A Window! His most creative phases were 1966-1969 (he wrote practically every hit of revolver, whereas John and George provided good album songs), Sgt Pepper' of course... Over the half of the songs from McCartney were written in 1969 or 1968 (Maybe I'm Amazed, Every Night, Junk, Teddy Boy, Hot As Sun, Suicide (1957)) Through the 1970s he wrote some fantastic songs, the thing is, they are liteweight, that's why people diss him. But Silly Love Songs, With A Little Luck, Listen To What The Man Said are fantastic songs that are up to his Beatles songs! But even when people wrote him off (Back To The Egg, McCartney II which have great songs btw!!) he came back with Tug Of War! The 1980s were awful, save for Most of the Tug Of War/Pipes Of Peace songs were written in 1980, before John was shot. The rest was written in 1981. And even though it seemed that he has lost his talent, he came back with Flowers, and in the 1990s he kicked ass with his tours and the two album. I think Off The Ground is not popular, but I like almost every track!! The 00s were even better and I still love Memory Almost Full. And yes, saying Macca sucks is pure ignorance. I know in this forums are many who think the Beatles are overrated but one can't say a man like McCartney who is musically succesful for almost 50 years sucks must be dumb! | |
