Interesting. This is one of the worst cds that I have purchased in quite a while. I will probably NEVER play this cd again.

Wise choice.

It takes a couple of spins to hear the work that went into it. On the surface, it just sounds like a contemporary R&B CD but when you listen to the stuff going on behind the groove, you hear some work. The vocals are ON POINT!
Like I said, I understand what he was doing now. He sacrificed his old fans in an attempt to get new ones. Will it work? Who knows? He's definitely got some singles on there.

The vocals are always on point but the music is weak and Charlies isn't talking about anything. Waste of talent.

See, I'm not so sure about this. The industry worked really hard to shift the general age range of celebs down to teens and early 20s with this generation BUT.....a strong web campaign can get practically anyone in the door as has been proven. So, with that in mind, the POTENTIAL to sell older artists increases when you factor in international success. Internationally, the kids aren't as brainwashed into believing their stars have to have been in the same class as they were in, so its not as much of an issue. I'm not saying its going to work or that they are even trying. I'm betting that there's not really enough data on the subject because no one really tries nowadays. I agree that I believe that the target market is the 20-somethings and not the teens and pre-teens.

Exactly. The younger people usually do not want to hear from the older artists even when they do sell out to their slow dull sound. So the solution is, make what your old fans liked you for to begin with, which was funk. No they aren't going to buy it in droves like they used to back when funk was still in style but at least some of them will still buy it. That's better than having no sales trying to go after the young audience, not to mention keeping your good reputation by not selling out to the current dull ass scene.

The way I see it, please the fans that made you a star to begin with. And what do they want? They want funk. And when I say funk, I'm not talking about some slow ass shit and slinging a funk title on it like Chaka Khan did on her last album. I'm talking about making some hard ass, drum pounding, ass shakin' funk. If the young audience likes it, fine. But if they don't like it, fuck 'em.

I agree. That's why I think his last album did so well. It was appealing to the older crowd that still liked music. He had a good balance of uptempo and slow music. Come on, what 50 year old man doesn't like to say "I can do magic" in the bedroom.
lol

As for the funk, we need to face it, funk has evolved into smooth r&b. You will never get another hard-pounding funk album especially from an old school artist. Chaka tried with "Disrespectful" from her last album, but that song didn't get any play. Prince did the same with "Musicology". That song didn't get any play. The masses aren't feeling funk right now (for whatever reason).

That's why I don't buy any new albums from the old artists and refuse to until they get their selves together and throwdown again.

Prince is the only one that still throws some uptempo funk on his albums. That's why he's the only old artist that I still buy current albums from.

The reason is, because they have evolved into a bunch of boring ass motherfuckers that have kissed ass and tolerated the music that was thrown out to them. I'm a bitch and I have high standards. I also have a huge selection of old music to tide me over until things get better again (that is, if they ever get better again). A lot of other folks my age could keep their standards high too if they had not gotten rid of all their old music. They could just throw on an old jam and tell everyone current to kiss their ass. lol

True. An example would be the barkays last album house party. I love the
barkays but why the fuck they feel the need to do a hip hop song. Shonuff
just wasn't the barkays. I kind of liked the ballad superstar. They were
even to cheap to do a full studio album as house party was basically a
re release of the real thing with 3 new tracks.
Don't laugh at my funk

I listened first and i said hell naw and i am forever grateful i didn't
throw 10 dollars away on this crap. I liked the last album better but i
like his 2000 release bridging the gap best.

You know, they had no excuse for using a studio. Jazzy Pha should have let his dad use his studio whenever he wanted.

He may be aiming for the younger audience so to speak with the new album but I'm not part of that "younger audience", lol. lol

He probably can't afford 2 retire. He just married another lady younger than he is. He has to keep the cashflow coming in.

Besides, I think he gets tired of doing the same Gap Band show.

Babyface & Calvin Richardson wrote 'There Goes My Baby', Calvin first recorded the song, so Charlie covered it.

I guess I could have picked up the liner notes.
