While I'm at it, in my opinion, Robert was the perfect example of why some white artist are more successful singing "our" music and by "our", I mean black music. I feel it's because, they take the time to study every note and where it came from. Some of us, take it for granted that since it is "our" music we don't have to study it. The end result is something very inferior and not listenable. This is just MY opinion....

Umm,,,I don't think so.

I dig Palmer's voice but he couldn't hold a candle to Uncle Charlie's hell raising version.

I know what you're saying, but to some it does. It's a shame, isn't it?

Music always has and always will have color. If it didn't, we wouldn't need Billboard charts based on race (i.e., The R&B charts). R&B and Pop have been blending for years but they still insist on having a separate chart and genre based on racial lines.

nod nod nod Not only that, but the day I prefer Robert Palmer's vocals on a track over Charlie Wilson's is the day I go deaf.

Say that again for these unfunky muther suckas! Where's the energy? Its not a poor rendition but Robert Palmer can't hold a candle to Uncle Charlie. That brotha can SANG! To top it off, LIVE...The GAP Band is off the hook. I remember when they blew the Time away on one of those old school tours. Live, they are no joke. This doesn't hold a candle to the original recording IMO, either.

I guess I'm in the minority but I never liked any of Robert Palmer's cover versions. Some artists (like Luther Vandross) could remake a song and actually improve on the original.Robert wasn't one of those artists.

So, you're gonna tell me that his version of "I Want You/Mercy, Mercy, Me, does not live up to the original? I mean, nobody can hold a candle to Marvin but Robert's version came pretty damn close...

Nobody said that Charlie could not sing, he can. Although, not my favorite Gap band song, (Opps Upside your head is my favorite) Robert did a pretty good version.

Hell, I'll say that. I like that one well enough, but I don't think it's anywhere near the original. My favorite remakes involving Palmer are "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On," "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming," and "Bang a Gong (Get It On)."
