Could a show like Soul Train or American Bandstand be successful in this generation? America doesn't have shows like ST or Bandstand these days, but if the formula was revived, could it work? Doesn't show like Soul Train, American Bandstand, Tops Of The Pops, The Hitman & Her, Club MTV, & The Party Machine count as earlier "reality shows"?!? BTW, I rather bring back The Party Machine & Club MTV. At least THOSE shows were 5 days/nights a week.

I think these shows could be successful especially towards the younger generation. I'll seriously doubt I'll be watching it though because I'm not feeling the music acts of today like I was in the 80's and 90's.
Then again, it would be weird watching Soul Train and American Bandstand without seeing Don Cornelius and America's Oldest Teenager, Dick Clark.

This generation doesn't know how to dance, especially girls. Booty poppin doesn't count.

Going out to the clubs lately has been a sad, sad experience. 200 people wiggling their asses, and me and my buddy will be the only ones doing something that could actually be called dancing. I think my most despised "move" right now for girls is the half-bored slo-mo hip-shaking, coupled with clutching for dear life onto her purse under her arm. Sometimes with a frat boy-looking fist pump thrown in. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

I was going to reply with the same thing. The kids don't dance anymore. The girls just stand in place and maybe every few seconds or so bounce their butts once or twice, then go back to sipping on their drink while throwing shade at the other girls near by. The guys all just stand along the walls trying to look menacing, while secretly checking each other out. The emphasis on DANCE is gone, and the social model has gone berserk.

You could never have a show like that these days because dance music has to exist in order to have a dance show. These sissified dorky ass wannabe thugs these days prefer their music as slow as a fucking opera. Andy is a four letter word.

That's because there's not any music fast enough to dance to unless the DJ plays something very old. Andy is a four letter word.

Glad to hear it! Carry On! This may be funny to hear, but me and my friends are breakdancers, so when we're at school or at the club, it sometimes turns from an outing to a scene from Beat Street "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

They should have more dance shows now like bboy (Jay) pointed out, there's still dancers that don't always be on Dancing with the Stars. Maybe we will have a round of dance shows in the near future...HOPEFULLY!

The thing is that there are no real major outlets to promote anymore. Unless you do something out of the ordinary like u2 doing a week on Letterman or sometimes when artists do the Oprah show it does help push a record. But as far as there being a "music outlet" there is none in america. I look at the UK and when a Pop group like Girls Aloud put out a record they go on like 15 different variety shows based in the UK, even the american acts go over there and do it, Lady Gaga is doing it now, Amerie did shit loads of it, PCD the same, you name it and they do them. America needs to put some focus back on daily/weekly shows ON MUSIC and get with it, this is another reason for the downfall of sales etc.. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

NO, even TOTP which was HUGE in the UK since the 1960s had to stop airing. People don't depend on such shows anymore, they can watch videos, performances whenever the want.

My first question would be, specific to Soul Train, what "Bands" would you have on the show. Mint Condition every week? tA Tribal Disorder http://www.soundclick.com...dID=182431 "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

No, the music sucks so the dancing going to suck as well. Some of these "dances" of the last few years are laughable. Chicken Noodle Soup? Harlem Shuffle? God knows what other kind of shake is labeled dancing. Nah, we don't need another American Bandstand or Soul Train in 2009. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Yeah, you AND the rest of New York needs to apologize for that shit right there There are acts out there that do make great dance music. It could be a great opportunity for artists who don't get much play to finally get in the spotlight "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. Award show performances are boring/depressing these days, so just imagine how awful a show like Soul Train would look now. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

It could be a great opportunity for artists who don't get much play to finally get in the spotlight I take no responsibility for that cause I was living in California at that time When I came back to NY and saw kids doing the Chicken Noodle on the subway for money, I just shook my head thinking to myself "when will these kids go to the next subway car already?" I do agree with you that it would be great to have a place where dance artists and groups can be exposed. Lady Gaga is proof that dance music can still sell. I hope there will be more acts coming out to the mainstream as a result. Maybe once that happens, then the 2nd coming of AB or ST can happen. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

If so, that would be a great idea but don't forget, it's not just radio that is being controlled by monopolies such as Clear Channel, television is being controlled more and more by companies like Viacom. Those companies aren't going to give anything the light of day that might possibly overthrow shit hop. They would be cool with shows like "Dancing With The Stars" because that's dorky ass dancing for couples or ballroom type dancing (yawn). The general public will simply just sit at "watch" dance shows like that but shows like "Soul Train" that have individuals dancing on their own which are the type of dances that the general public would immitate themselves, would require new dance music. If that new dance music costs more than shit hop and caught on, then the labels would have to shell out more money for their new acts. These corporations are all watching each others' backs.
