I've heard them say this. lol How wrong they are... hope they don't hear that. shhh lol

Theres alot of "80's Prince" things that everyone gives a pass to, and no one ever says a word.

ONE....The Revolution was not a GREAT band, sorry they werent, even P was nowhere the musician he became

TWO....Vanity,The Family,Apollonia were nothing special, stop treating these albums as if they deserve REMASTERING and EXPANDED EDITIONS.

THREE...Dont compare everything new with what he did already, if you want Sign O the times again, then take your ass to the store and buy it, or throw on the iPod and get your Sign on 24/7

I never thought the classic minni sound was funk, but alot of people do. It could even be blasted as "watered down funk" I guess.

It always boggles my mind when some clown thinks they know what is and isn't funk.

1979 is calling, the mother ship connection in the chocolate city wants your ass home now!

I read last week's jet article feature on the MJG where are they now.
All the girls seem to be live and well. Lead singer Jo Jo tours on
her own without the rest of the girls and was said to be the only girl
who didn't attend rick james funeral. She admitted they fell in and out
just like friends do but regretted they didn't resolve their issues before
his death. Cheri left the group because of rick's drug problems.
I wonder if JoJo fell out with the rest of the girls because the other
girls had been touring with Val Young as lead singer for awhile before the other girls gave Val Young the boot. Strange things going on here with the girls.
Don't laugh at my funk

Geez I could care less about either.
I already got a Rick James concert cd. It's a complete show.
I don't really like any new music from Prince. It's not really funky anyways.

I feel I can say this on this part of the site without hate, but he has not interested me since "the rainbow children" (which is good and a real return to form at the time after "rave", which was mainly substandard and dull). Judging by the singles I have heard since, he sounds average, tired, or just bored. Not bad, but just kinda "there". He needs time off personally. Take a few years out. Do some film scores. Do something else LOL.

I got "planet earth" for free so I gave it a listen. Couldn't get past track 2. Heck, he had a amazing run of interesting albums and music. But for now at least, his new stuff means nothing to me.

I don't waste my $ on music dvds anymore - I watch a portion of the show & then don't bother watching anymore. Doesn't matter who it is I just can't sit & watch music dvds. Its the ADD.
So therefore I'm more excited by the Prince cds. biggrin

I saw JoJo in concert last month. She performs with two girls who were not a part of the MJGs,billing herself as "JoJo of the Mary Jane Girls".Between songs, she mentioned that she has a new solo CD called 'Slightly Dangerous' which you can buy from her website...

www.jojourbandiva.com

Apparently,it's a Quiet storm affair....a covers album of jazzy songs, including Sade's "Is It A Crime".It was produced by a member of the Stone City Band. And yes,JoJo had some kind of disagreement with the other Mary Jane Girls. Not sure what is was about, but they haven't toured together in years.

Excuse you?!? rolleyes Rick James, Cameo, Roger/Zapp, Bar-Kays, Midnight Starr, Trouble Funk, & The Dazz Band kept The Funk alive during most of the 80's. Get your music history facts straight next time before you enter a professional discussion with funk fans! wink

WTF? eek Funk is very much alive, very vibrant, and that with bands from all over the world, for the first time. It's just not a mainstream phenomen.

Exactly. There was also The Isley Brothers, Con Funk Shun, Xavier, Sunrize, D Train, The Gap Band, One Way, Rafael Cameron, Ebonee Webb, Lakeside, New Horizons, Bootsy Collins, Bill Summers and Summers Heat, Sun, Starpoint, Kleeer, Slave, Ray Parker, Jr. and Raydio, Fatback, War, Junior, Glass, Bobby Nunn, etc.

People who really weren't into funk during the early 80s tend to only know funk that the critics have talked about for years which is usually groups from the early to mid 70s with all the horns such as James Brown or Parliament that have talked about to death. They don't realize that funk progressed, modernized it's sound, and continued on until around 1984. Then there are people who claim to like funk but weren't really into it back then or a lot of the younger people. They hear that extreme uptempo funk of the early 80s with that modern sound and less horns and confuse it with disco. I can't tell you how many stupid DJs I have heard say that "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" was released in 1979.

Funk wasn't just an early 70s sound full of horns. It evolved and changed into a more modern sound in the early 1980s but it was still funk.

Andy, I don't really think it's a valid comparison.

Let's not forget that when the new Prince albums come out, he will also be launching the new website, which is rumored to have a substantial video archive (both music videos and live performances) dating all the way back to Purple Rain days.

So with that said, I'll be interested to see the Rick James DVD but I'm wayyyyy more excited to see what Prince has got in store for us.
