The Rick James DVD.... by a fucking mile. After hearing "Disco Jellyfish" on Prince's new site, I'm not really looking forward to any new music from him.

That's not going to be on any of the CD's.

I know, I saw the tracklists.
It is not known why FuNkeNsteiN capitalizes his name as he does, though some speculate sunlight deficiency caused by the most pimpified white guy afro in Nordic history.

Judging by THIS thread, Rick James (while Resting In Peace, mind you) will get another victory off of Prince.....again!

don't say that in Music And More lol

That's why I didn't put this thread over in that section. Those obsessed looney toons would lose their minds. Rick has some looney ass obsessed fans on his site also though. lol

I'm excited about both, but I'm more excited about P. I say that only because I've been waiting for a multi-disc of new material from P. We haven't had one since Emancipation (unless you classify CB as new material).

Rick is cool, and I will buy that DVD also, but P takes the cake anyway. How old was Rick when he lost his "funk" card? So many keep saying P lost his (which I can't see how someone could say that), when did Rick lose his? I would say with the Reflections album. That song "17" was a mess. Not to mention the "funk" that came out after that album. Glow? The Flag? I'll take TRC anyday over those 2 albums.

Around 1985 for Slick Rick.

Same year for Prince also. lol

Both of them fell off that year. Rick weakened his funk by dropping his horns (which worked for him) and getting more synths trying to compete with Prince. Prince weakened his funk by adding horns (which didn't work for him), stopped sounding like the original "Prince" which had a sound of his own, and started trying more to sound like his childhood musical heros such as James Brown.

Yeah, because Rick's DVD is going to be a bunch of "hey day" performances that people want to see. Rick at his fonkiest! Slick Rick (the original, that is) is gone and therefore he's not around to fuck up and get worse...unlike some other artists...I won't mention any names. Some people get better at different points in their careers.

That's the reason I'm more excited about Rick James's. Because it's "old" Rick James stuff. If it was an album of new music from Rick James, I wouldn't even buy it because it would be midtempo sellout shit with the shit hop drum machines on it.

I'm excited about Prince's new album also because Prince is the only one these days that can still throwdown when he wants to. But if it was "Old Prince" from 1978 to 1984 stuff, I'd be even more excited than Rick's hey-day stuff.

I still like 17. That is a musical synth masterpiece to my ears. But Sweet And Sexy Thing was a creative low. Rick was just too lazy around this point of his career (too many party drugs?!?).

Same here. Planet Earth was a huge disappointment from prince's standpoint
but i'm surprised that 3121 gets no love. I dug that album especially the
title track and black sweat which were both pretty funky to me as well as
the ballads, fury, and get on the boat. As far as rick i have the last
concert dvd that he came out with and it was okay. In fact i've only watched
it twice so i'm not exactly overly exited about spending 30 dollars on a chopped up dvd.
Don't laugh at my funk

I wouldn't say that for Prince, but a lot of people do.

I do agree about the horns. To me, Prince didn't really learn how to utilize horns until 1994/95. The horns that Brian did on Billy Jack Bitch are CRAZY!!!!!

Soooo true. I can only think of Kiss and maybe New Position that could be considered FUNK. The rest is sooo not able to be categorized.
