Whitney Houston - My Name Is Not Susan video

http://www.youtube.com/wa...TY8IWwPjRw

You know, it is funny as hell to see Whitney dancing in the background while Monie is rapping. I love this song, though.

Yep....this is it..

I watched this the other night and fell out laughing when I saw the shots of her dancing while Monie Love is rapping. She's doing everything from the "Reebok" to the stripper pole dances. FUNNY AS HELL!!!

Whitney was never a good dancer and she proved it in this video lol I like the song;though....

"don't wanna hear about Susan
she got nothin' on me
So show some respect
for the love you receive"

Even Vainady can dig this. It's an uptempo R&B groove lol

.....and fake as hell! rolleyes lol Whitney was never exactly "hood" to begin with.

EDIT: To be dead honest, I'm very surprise that Clive Davis allow Whitney to even have a music video like this. He usually try to make Whitney as white valley girl sounding as possible.

So Emotional is a little faster than My Name Is Not Susan. At least there are no hip-hop OR shit-hop elements involved!!! lol

This remix adds little, but I do like the album version though. Shockinly, not written by La Reid/Babyface! Sounds just like it (and it was produced by them of course).

SHOCKING FACTS: So Emotional was written & composed by the same then-husband & wife duo that later became Boy Meet Girl (the group with their only USA hit Waiting For A Star To Fall).

Yeah I knew that LOL. Iam a big fan of Boy meets girl. Got 3 of their albums. They also wrote "I wanna dance with somebody". Allegedly, they wrote "waiting for a star.." for Whitney, but Clive turned it down (probably too pop).

Now, talk about a desperate attempt to not be considered a sellout! A lot of us remember this entire album was in response to her being "Booooed" at the Soul Train Awards a couple of year prior every time anything from her 1987 album "Whitney" was announced as a nominee for one of the awards. Honestly, I never understood why the black community considered the "Whitney" album as not black enough. Did they bother to listen to her remake of "For The Love Of You" or, probably my favorite song from her, "Just The Lonely Talking Again"? But, then again, "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "Broken Hearts" were just about as Pop as Pop can get! biggrin

Black people listened to the album, but I think that a lot of black people were upset that those 2 songs you mentioned weren't released as singles, therefore they couldn't hear it on the radio daily. Some stations did play those songs during "the quiet storm" , but that was about it.

I honestly don't know why the black stations (which were playing funk) would have even played any of her songs. The fact that they played her alongside folks like Zapp, Lakeside, or The Barkays is sheer racism itself. I mean, I sure as hell didn't hear Debbie Boone or Barbara Streisand being played alongside folks like Def Leppard or Van Halen on hard rock white stations. I guess black stations are supposed to just accept anybody black whether it fits their format or not.

Did they bother to listen to her remake of "For The Love Of You"

I heard it and she absolutely ruined it.

or, probably my favorite song from her, "Just The Lonely Talking Again"? But, then again, "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "Broken Hearts" were just about as Pop as Pop can get! biggrin

That shit ain't even pop. It's adult contemporary and it don't get no worse than adult contemporary. Well, I take that back....shit hop is worse than adult contemporary. lol

Her remake of "For The Love Of You" is brilliant! I love the cool, exotic feel of it.The other song you mentioned "Just The Lonely Talking Again" is also a remake. It was originally recorded by the Manhattans. Both of these remakes are exceptional.

It's a goodun. Fun beat and different from the poppier upbeat stuff from the first two discs. A bit of funk going on. Too bad it wasn't a bigger hit.

I think I remember hearing that the title and the name "Susan" was in a twisted away inspired by not liking Madonna (or not wanting to be confused with her...musically?)....Apparently the writer connecting the name "Susan" to the Madonna character in "Desperately Seeking Susan"?

Not making this a Madonna thread but just something I heard.

I think this was her first song that didn't do well on the pop charts, but did get an r&b hit out of it (I think number one...AlexdeParis where r u?). lol

Outside of Gerald Alston's solo work, I'm not familiar with a lot of the Manhattans stuff. They never got a lot of airplay here in Michigan. I never knew they were the originators of "Just The Lonely Talking Again". I'll have to check it out. Don't think it will live up to Nippy's version, though.

Allmusic.com says it only hit number 8 on the R&B charts. 20 on the pop....easily her lowest charting single since the solo singles started, which where numbers ones or at least top ten...Before this, her lowest ranking single was another sort of dip into different territory, number 9 ranking "Love Will Save the Day" (a bit different for her, no?). Even "I Believe In You" and "Count On Me" hit the top ten (not that they are bad songs but not typical pop faire, especially at the time).

It's weird. I never liked Whitney's uptempo stuff until I heard "I'm Your Baby Tonight". Pop Whitney just didn't work for me. Especially POP Whitney from the 2nd album.

If I had to pick my top Whitney songs, I would pick
I Go To The Rock
Why Does It Hurt So Bad (Live Version)
Lover For Life

I like those remakes, especially the latter one. It's one of the few moments on the album where she sounds truly soulful.

I like this song, too.I remember Black Beat magazine's scathing review of this album, where they dissed this song:

"So Emotional" is Whitney's ode to Janet Jackson...big drum sound and all,but it's urgency isn't nearly as authentic

critics! disbelief lol
