TTD's You Will Pay Tomorrow For What You Do Today

I think Terence Trent D'arby's You Will Pay tomorrow should have been the lead single from Neither Fish Nor Flesh, it would have been a good follow up to Dance Little Sister.

I really like that song, but I don't think it would have been a hit.

I am still puzzled at the way this guy just fizzled out after one CD. I know he created more music (I had Symphony or Damn and Vibrator) but the shooting star quality of his debut always seemed tragic.....not to be a downer or anything. biggrin

And yeah, I did like this song.

I think this side of love was a great lead single. But I do agree that this should have been a single.

In my opinion NFNF is one of the most underrated albums of all time.

It may have been too reminiscent of "Hardline" for T. There were a number of strong tracks on that project. "TSOL" was my pick for a lead-off track. I remember watching an MTV promo special on it, one Saturday morning when it was about to be released, thinking,"This is going to be a tight album!"

I think T's bad publicity -- not to mention a ticked-off music press (apparently the Beatles are sacred cows) -- led to his undoing. I think there's more than a little subtext to the whole TTD-Beatles deal, but I probably see subtext in most things, so... arrow

What is the TTD-Beatles story or rumor?

allegedly there is a quote from TTD saying that labels biggest artist, told the people at epic not to promote TTD because he was going around saying he was going to be bigger and he was taking attention away from him. at the time MJ was on Epic, don't know how true it is. I have heard everything that it was the quote about the beatles to posing nude on a crucifix ( a photo I have never seen )

I have also read that the labels warned him not to release such a artistic risky follow up during the holiday season, it may have been a number of things that lead to his undoing. A strange career indeed, from what I heard he had some big hits in the UK from Symphony or Damn, Frankie & Johnny was used as the opening theme to a television show and scored hits on movie soundtracks. I agree with those that say NFNF is underrated, I think he is a underrated artist period, I find myself returning to his music often catching the bug and going through a ttd/Sananda phase. One thing I can say, that he has over other multi instrumental performer dancer types over his peers is a voice to be reckoned with, what a great singer.

I was surprised to hear this one being the song he ended his set with the last time he was "touring" in Europe (6+ years ago). The encore was those two... well sorry, godawful songs he was back then offering as free downloads ("She Knows I'm Leaving", "Daddy Can I Have A War").

Actually - just to be clear - the TTD albums were released on Columbia/CBS records - a division of Sony and nothing to do with Epic. With regards to that quote being directed at Michael, at the time I heard rumours it was actually about George Michael. Either way, the album had a few singles off it but just didn't get the critical acclaim at the time, in fact was pretty much universally panned.

I thought the whole story sounded kind of fishy. One minute this dude sounds reminiscent of Sam Cooke and the next he sounds like an Angel. Seems like he should have been a household name.

Compared to Sananda's two chicks, I'd say you're right. I guess he didn't have the budget to take this video in the direction of the lyrics. shrug

I like the other video for this better. It looks like a one-shot take: T walks through different parts of a set, kind of a day-in-the-life. Both vids begin and end with "the same shot," which I guess is a theme he's exploring these days.

Somehow, I envisioned more of a visual interpretation with this song.
You know, something like him searching for Divina but just missing her or continuously running into women who look like her from the back but turns out not to be her. shrug

Yeah, I envisioned the same thing. T used to be cool, but he reminds me of a more-agile version of The Guru in this video. Especially when he smirks at the camera...
