you must have Pirates worship[/quote]

Hi RD,

Yeah, I liked Pirates and Rickie Lee's first CD a lot.

Sometimes when courting new a girlfriend I would make tapes of really positive songs and one song by Rickie Lee was "The Horses" which is on I forget which CD but Walter Becker from Steely Dan produced it.

It might have been Cowboys or Flying Cowboys.

The worship goes to God for giving us all the gift of music.

"The Horses" is on "Flying Cowboys" and it was co-written By Walter Becker and Rickie Lee Jones.

I stand corrected.

The New York Times said God is dead

Too Far Down by Husker Du, has got to be one of the saddest songs ever. ill give you the lyrics... check it out if ya can toots... i got it at home... if you are so inlclined

Too Far Down:

I'm down again
And I don't know how to tell you but, maybe this time I cant come back
Cuz I might be too far down.

I wish for real
That I could turn it on and off
like hot and cold and up and down
Cuz im down again.

Im too far down.
I couldnt begin to smile because I can't even laugh or cry,
I just cant do it.

If it was soo easy to be happy, why I am so down??
all I can do is sit and wonder if its going to end.
Or if i should just go away forever.

When I sit and think
I wish that I jsut could die, or
let someone else be happy by setting my own self free.

And you dont want the emotion !!!
Cuz the taste it pleases for real but
Nothings ever real until its gone,
and i might be too far down !!

Im down again, and I guess im not the only one
who dreams that theres not any way to tell you...
that i might be too far down.

The New York Times said God is dead

I guess Levon will give us the answer to that.

And hopefully the editors of The NY Times know the words to Nelly on Judgement Day.

Rickie Lee Jones is great. She and Joni Mitchell share the same birthday and back in the days Joni used to hate on Rickie Lee calling her a clone and other non-positive stuff.

They are both great and hopefully Joni gets that stick out of her butt about the music biz. It's better to put out music and just let people appreciate it regardless of industry politics. At least Joni has a record deal.

Look at all the people discussed here like Anita, Loose Ends, The Reddings, and many more. As great as they are they don't have deals. (I'm not sure if Anita is with a new label. She and Elektra were having problems.)

Donny Hathaway is the most depressing artist that I have heard.

Seriously? confuse

He committed suicide by jumping out of a window back in the early 80's. You can hear the pain that he was experiencing in his music. Donny Hathaway is Soul Music.

Yes, but there are discrepancies about that by those who knew him. You never know what to believe.
I Feel He got Pushed out&there is alot more too it than alot of people want too admit too IMHO.

Sad songs say so much. lol

Elton John did a real weeper called Goodbye:

"And now that it's all over
The birds can nest again
I'll only snow when the sun comes out
I'll shine only when it starts to rain

And if you want a drink
Just squeeze my hand
And wine will flow into the land
And feed my lambs

For I am a mirror
I can reflect the moon
I will write songs for you
I'll be your silver spoon

I'm sorry I took your time
I am the poem that doesn't rhyme
Just turn back a page
I'll waste away, I'll waste away
I'll waste away, I'll waste away
I'll waste away, I'll waste away"

Then there's Skyline Pidgeon:

"Turn me loose from your hands
Let me fly to distant lands
Over green fields, trees and mountains
Flowers and forest fountains
Home along the lanes of the skyway

For this dark and lonely room
Projects a shadow cast in gloom
And my eyes are mirrors
Of the world outside
Thinking of the way
That the wind can turn the tide
And these shadows turn
From purple into grey

For just a Skyline Pigeon
Dreaming of the open
Waiting for the day
He can spread his wings
And fly away again
Fly away skyline pigeon fly
Towards the dreams
You've left so very far behind

Just let me wake up in the morning
To the smell of new mown hay
To laugh and cry, to live and die
In the brightness of my day

I want to hear the pealing bells
Of distant churches sing
But most of all please free me
From this aching metal ring
And open out this cage towards the sun"

Churchie.

Nick Cave - The Boatman's Call

Entire album sounds like a suicide letter. Beautiful beyond
words. I love every note of it. It ranks right up there
with some of my favorit Prince albums. Absolutely Brilliant.

Tori Amos - From The Choirgirl Hotel

Not really depressing but still dark and brooding. And yes,
very moody. Written after she lost her first baby. Lyrics
are very hard and depressing. The sonics create a strange
and bewildering landscape. It feels otherworldly. Truely.
I actually like this better than any Prince album I've got.

Tricky - Maxinquaye

Very moody, a bit depressing. A perfect album. Even after
all these years it still sounds quite fresh. It's sound is
one of beautiful agony. That's the best way to describe it.
Revelling in the absurd and grotesque and finding the true
beauty in it. Lyrics are spectacular.

Portishead - Portishead

What can I say? It's like chronic depression WITH a huge
hangover and the knowledge you'll have to go to the vet in
the afternoon to put your dog to sleep. That bad. Beth G
sounds like Minni Mouse turned mass murderer, with a side
serving of helium. It's got a pseudo Bond theme on there
and the track "Western Eyes" weighs like a noose around ur
neck.

Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion

Well, it's certainly dark. It's got some really depressed
song on it and also a lot of angry one. About people who
mess with you and about how we all really yearn for love
but take abuse just as gladly just to receive something.
It's one of those utterly spellbinding albums that create
their own sound -even within the band's scope-, like U2's
Achtung Baby or Tori's Choirgirl Hotel. Best song on there
is probably "Walking In My Shoes". Holy mother!

Beck's new album sounds kinda sad too, and perhaps a bit
depressed, but not too much.

PJ Harvey's "Is This Desire" sounds very moody and dark
and hopeless in places. With some very cunning lyrics. And
a 'planet of the apes' sample no less smile

I won't even start about Radiohead, cuz I will go on and on
until the middle of the night. Can someone say "Climbing up
the Walls"?

Urgh, there's just too much. 90% of my recordcollection is
depressing, dark, suicidal music.

But out of all those Nick Cave just takes the prize for
being the most depressed. The songs are all very beautiful
but they are sooooo way down dark it's unbelievable. Just
listen to 'darker with the day' on And We Shall Never Part
or "People Just Ain't No Good" on The Boatman's Call.

The closing finale of "Hallelujah" with the repeat chorus
of "the tears are welling in my eyes again, I need 20 big
buckets to catch them in, 20 pretty girls to carry them
down, 20 deep holes to burry them in" is so cool that I
can't find words to describe it. You just have to hear the
song, the hopeless agony of it, the anger and the madness
and hear it all ultimately lead to these final lines being
repeated over and over again. If I could write music I
would hope to be able to write something like this. 20Stars!

I'm ranting, aren't I. Sorry for that!

Anyway, I hope you feel better soon!!!

hug

Beck's new album Sea Change is dark and beautiful. It's depressing in a Pink Floyd kind of way--and it's very sincere sounding in that respect. Not suicidal, just really sad--the whole album is.

Dark can be so lovely.

I find the first Coldplay album to be rather romantic, yes the music is meloncholy but take a song like Yellow, I think it's more of a positive love song to someone. There's a very positive tone to the lyrics of Sparks, Yellow, Everythings Not Lost...

I love this disc.
