moody, depressing, sad, sad music Inspired by my thread in P:M&M, which was insired by the funk I'm in today...
What are your favorite songs/artists to listen to when you're feeling blue? What drags you down deeper? What brings you back up? For me, I've spent the day listening to the Cure and I'll be pulling out Otis Redding and probably the Smiths later. But tomorrow will be a new day... |

Get this asap! You can never go wrong with Neil Diamond. Is Beth included? I'll have to go look for it today. Get me out of the house. Yes, I love the stark-winter-70's-Deer Hunter thing. Very well done. And Natalie Portman is just adorable. Although the film takes place in New York it was filmed in Minnesota, and I'm always a sucker for hometown things. |

Donny Hathaway is the most depressing artist that I have heard. He committed suicide by jumping out of a window back in the early 80's. You can hear the pain that he was experiencing in his music. Donny Hathaway is Soul Music.

Yes, but there are discrepancies about that by those who knew him. You never know what to believe. This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

Bjork's Vespertine...a masterpiece...starkly beautiful and as emotionally exposed as any great Ingmar Bergman film.
Faith and Courage by Sinead...another very special album for me...spiritually uplifiting, liberating and tender. Universal Mother by Sinead..."John,I love you i'm ever so fond of you..." Tim Buckley...Happy/Sad...if your a Jeff Buckley fan,you owe it to yourself to discover his father's underrated body of work. Kate Bush...The Hounds Of Love...last but certainly not least,I hold this album very close to my heart. It got me through quite a lot...

Sting--the lyrics to 'Fragile', especially: "perhaps this final act was meant to clinch a lifetime's argument that nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could. For all us born beneath an angry star lest we forget how fragile we are"
Sinead O'Connor--Thank You David Gray--Say Hello Wave Goodbye Elton John--Someone Saved My Life Tonight Dido--All You Want

Anyone should listen to anything fro Islandic band Sigur Ros, perfect soundtrack to a depressing mood. Beautiful music and lyrics in a mix of Islandic- and the fantasy-language called Hopelandic!
Give it a try! | |

I love depressing music. For example:
Red house painters - Katy Song "quiet in the corner i've been falling through, without you what does my life amount to?" Hank Williams -Alone and Forsaken "alone and forsaken by fate and by man, oh god if you hear me please hold to my hand, oh please understand" The Smiths - How soon is now "there's a club if you'd like to go, you could meet somebody who really loves you. so you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home and you cry and you want to die" Leadbelly - Goodnight Irene "If Irene turns her back on me, I'm gonna take morphine and die" and also: Joy Division - Atmosphere Lorraine Ellison - Stay with me Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - I see a darkness I woke up sunday morning with no way to hold my head that didn't hurt
and the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad so I had one more for dessert

***"Games People Play (They Just Can't Stop It)" The Spinners (1975)---This song always depresses me.The lyrics, the somber arrangement and the female vocal ("Nowhere to go,it's hopeless so,I guess I'll leave it alone") just makes me feel so blue.
***"Bluer Than Blue" Michael Johnson (1978)---My mother had this 45 when I was a kid,and it's really a sad,sad song with depressing lyrics ("Im Bluer than blue, sadder than sad, you're the only life this empty room has ever had...life without you is gonna be Bluer Than Blue"). ***"They Long To Be (Close To You)" The Carpenters (1970?)---Lyrically,this is not a sad song at all.But for some reason, the arrangement sounds so sad to me.Hey! I should start a Carpenters thread...lol...
