You can see El, Marty and Randy in the pic Thanx for that trivia I've seen their album a few times in recordshops through the years, without realising the DeBarge-link, lol. Never took the moment to check the info on the backsleeve : The whole album can be heard and downloaded/purchased online : www.amazon.com/gp/product...540&sr=1-1 www.amazon.co.uk/gp/produ...=dm_sp_adp www.starzik.com/mp3/artis...34558.html

An instant classic indeed. Cool intro with that double drumclick, and great strings arrangements, especially towards the end of the song. I wonder if Clare Fisher also arranged the strings, like on their first album.

Just found this on the DeBarge yahoo-group
The unreleased album-sleeve of the first Switch album. It was only used for test-pressings. Bobby sitting in the chair on the backsleeve, wearing a jungle-hat (lol) and Tommy standing next to him with a photo-camera. I guess that was a lil' fashion trend, to wear those jungle-hats. I've seen various 70's snapshots of MJ wearing it too. [Edited 3/14/09 8:55am]

C L ... thanx ! Solid track. I was about to check if there was any stuff of them on the tube, but was still too busy browsing & checking other sites, lol. When i checked the soundsamples on Amazon, i noticed 1 or 2 tracks with the trademark falsetto-voice.

Some cool uploads from dailymotion :
www.dailymotion.com/searc...1985_music www.dailymotion.com/searc...-now_music www.dailymotion.com/searc...-1994_news I also dig some tracks on his "In The Storm"-album around 1992, which Maurice White from EW&F partly produced. The sound of a Soultrain-episode on Youtube with tracks from that album has been totally shut down unfortunately. Much ruthless websherrifing going on at Youtube. Now we can't even enjoy flashbacks from tv anymore.

Vintage Chico concert review from the late 90s
The resurrection of '70s soul continued with uneven abandon as the latest disciples of the genre, silky-voiced Joe and the youngest member of the pop/R&B crooning DeBarge family, Chico, performed similar music, with noticeably different effects Monday night at the House of Blues. Dressed in a black jacket, pants and glasses, with a gold cross shining prominently on his chest, DeBarge sat at his keyboards and let loose a sublime rendition of Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man." Ripping of his glasses before announcing that "I'm about to get nasty up in here," the singer worked his simmering voice through "No Guarantee," a mid-tempo tune with a latent Latin beat from his upcoming album, "Long Time No See." Just released after a six-year prison term for drug conspiracy, DeBarge offers music that contains an urgency and pain, providing the deep emotions necessary for soul music. His performance of his current single, the moody ballad "Iggin' Me," was full of hurt and desperation as he crooned, "I want to hold your hand/want to kiss your lips/I don't understand." Heralded as the next "king of soul," along the order of the extraordinary Luther Vandross, Joe displayed a rich, soulful voice, but none of the stage presence or emotional connection expected from such a billing. Gliding onstage in a black suit and the obligatory gold cross, Joe sang warmly with the hot, funky rhythms of "U Shoulda Told Me (U Had a Man)," from his current debut, "All That I Am." He wrapped his velvety voice around his smooth current single, "Don't Wanna Be a Playa," but his vocalizing reflected an average ability, nothing extraordinary, nothing moving. As the son of Pentecostal preachers and the former choir director for his parents' church, Joe boasts traditional credentials for a strong soul-singing career. Conversely, Chico DeBarge comes from a long line of producers of sugary, pop-oriented music, a style not noted for deep emotion. But DeBarge conjured up more passion than his brothers' groups, Switch and DeBarge, ever imagined, and Joe delivered none of the fire associated with gospel singing. So much for background. Backed by a tight band and rather soft-voiced male backup singers, Joe offered rote, methodical moves to accompany his anemic singing. When he performed his gold single, "All the Things (Your Man Won't Do)," his vocals contained none of the fire that the passionate ballad needed. Winding up his show with his current ballad, "Love Scene," Joe moaned, gyrated and ripped open his shirt. But the effect wasn't hot, only lukewarm. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I take it that the reviewer wasn't feeling Joe but enjoyed Chico. I will say Chico has the most soulful voice out of the DeBarge singers, IMHO. I would've have loved to have seen this concert if just for Chico

Speaking of Chico, here's another performance I uploaded to youtube. This is Chico singing "Listen To Your Man" and "Give You What You Want."

Yeah, that reviewer was down with Chico. Chico's voice is the most soulful, which is crazy, because back in the day, his voice wasn't as deep or as soulful. It was more popish. Incidentally, Brown Mark of a certain band called Prince and the Revolution produced and wrote this track.
Chico on Soul Train in 88, performing "I've Been Watching You" Chico on Solid Gold in 88, doing the same song [Edited 3/15/09 14:34pm] "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Just performances from Soul Train and Solid Gold. It's funny because both Janet and Chico were the funkiest and the youngest out their families' singers.

[Edited 3/15/09 17:54pm] Dang, I wished itwas longer than 19 or 20 seconds. El takes me out with the facial expressions he makes but it's nice to know he has a good sense of humor
