As sorry as they are, they probably didn't even order it. I have my copy in my hand as I speak. About two weeks ago, I asked my friends at my local record store (independent owned of course) if they would order it from wherever they get their products from. That way, it would come in on it's release date with the rest of the new releases for the week. I knew if I ordered it online, I'd still be waiting. I picked it up on my lunch hour. I can't wait till I get home this evening. Andy is a four letter word.

Quality
On the back page of the little inside booklet, in small print, there is a warning that some of the footage may have sound drops or defects in the sound due to the aging of the video tape. It did mention that they tried to enhance it as much as possible. They mentioned something else about some sort of syncing process. Despite the warning, the video quality looked excellent to me. No fuzzy film, no picture jumping, no blank spots in the film, etc. It looked crystal clear and brand new to me. As for the sound, it sounded great to me also. I haven't listened to it through my stereo yet, but listening to it through the TV last night, it sounded fine to me and I didn't notice any of the sound drops they warned about. I did notice something odd though. All the performances except the two or three that they took from the Rockpalest concert, appeared to be lip synced. I always thought that the artists played live on "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" but maybe they let them lip sync in later years. Anyway, on all the performances except the "Dinah Shore Shore", it appeared to be the studio version lip synced but when the songs faded at the end, you could see the audience clapping and cheering but you couldn't hear them. I'm wondering if part of the enhancement process for sound is to put the studio version over the original sound and keep it in sync with the video footage. I don't know, I'm no expert, but it just seemed that way to me since you couldn't hear the audience whatsoever. Content I had never heard of the show "Soul Alive". It appeared to be a "Soul Train/American Bandstand" type show but on a much smaller level. It almost looked liked a local show somewhere. These two performances were probably the weakest on the whole DVD. It was strictly Rick in his "Come Get It" outfit, alone with his guitar, standing in front of a logo with people dancing around him. The "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" performances were great also. They were from several years. As I said before, I was expecting those performances to be live but I still enjoyed them a lot anyway. The "Dinah Shore" performances were my favorite. You could hear the audience on these two and Dinah talked to Rick James before each song. He was in his white "Fire It Up" outfit and you could see a bulge from hell in the front of the pants. He flirted with Dinah a little. Dinah even cracked herself up introducing him. She called his brand of music "Punk Funk", then she described him as the funkiest punker, then she corrected herself and said the punkiest funker. That's when she cracked up because it sounded like "fucker" and she dropped the album she was holding. There were all his music videos that I remember except for "Bustin' Out", which I wish had been on there. I had never seen the videos for "69 Times", "Throwin' Down", and "Hard To Get". I enjoyed seeing those for the first time. I think some of them were actually the performances from "The R&B Music Awards" show. Speaking of "R&B Music Awards", there is footage of him talking via satellite about how happy he is to win the album of the year award, then he sings a song on his guitar that he wrote for the occassion. Afterwards, the Mary Jane Girls come out in the studio and accept the award for him. Overall, I was very pleased with the whole thing. Andy is a four letter word.

I got my copy in the mail on Tuesday, I pre-ordered off Amazon back when this thread first was posted, and it's a great DVD for all us "Punk Funkers" in here. The only complaint that I have is they cut some of the performances short, Mary-Go Round being the most obvious one, but overall it was good. The R&B awards segment was the best for me, Rick's thank you song was funny as hell "Stone City Baaand Thank Ya" LOL, Rick was a funny guy. Were the R&B awards televised back then? I need to check Youtube.

I got a chance to watch this last night, great performances. I was up til 3 in the morning watching the DVD. My favorite part was 'Mary Go Round' hands down, I was never a big fan of that song, but they 'Funked It Out'.
I think that they did a great job of putting the DVD together, it does a nice job of spanning his career with Motown, if you're a fan of his music, then you won't be disappointed, the Stone City Band are among the greatest to ever play, in my humble opinion, they really threw down. Lady Cab Driver is one of the greatest songs ever!

Actually, I wish they had left the three live performances off and replaced them with more performances from television shows such as "Soul Train" or maybe "Solid Gold". There is nothing wrong with the live performances but they are duplicates of three of the performances on the live Rick James DVD that was released a few years ago. Andy is a four letter word.

Were the R&B awards televised back then? I saw the R&B Awards on television only once in the early part of the year 1980 and never saw it on television again. The time I saw it was on a Saturday afternoon so I'm wondering if it was simply up to each local channel to decide if they wanted to show it or not. Andy is a four letter word.

If I had ordered it, I probably wouldn't receive it till the middle of next week. You must have ordered the express shipping. Be sure to come back and tell us what you thought of it. I'll be thinking of your ass when I'm watching it again tonight. Except this time, it's Friday so I'm going to get me some beer and some gin and plug my DVD player into my mixer so the sound will play through my stereo speakers. I may have seen the DVD before but tonight will be the first time I actually "hear" it.....and so will the neighbors. Andy is a four letter word.
