I'm in the same spot you are - I want to like it but something just leaves me cold about it. I think it may be too mellow for me. They play it at work a lot & it just never grabs hold of me. Nice voice though, maybe good to sleep to.

Sorry I couldn't help sad

I have the CD and love it. I've made about 10 copies and have given them to my friends and they all love it. It's a great, mellow cd, perfect for ending your day or listening to at dinner with someone special..

it doesn't really transcend past a certain point...it's def'ly a 'mood' cd...not somethin you're gonna play when you're gettin ready to go to a club or anything...

the truth is i like it, but i rarely listen to it...

I just bought it today. It's a really good CD; one that you'll chill at home with. The whole thing is really mellow, just piano, upright bass, drums and acoustic guitar. I really like it.

I would not call it a "jazz" album, But it's a nice change from all the crap that's played on the radio today.

Demanding aren't we? lol I'm not good with track by track breakdowns, so I'm gonna give you a vague review like everybody else. Let me start off by putting it like this. If you really want it, then nothing should stop you from buying it. Worse case scenario is that if you don't like it, you can take it back to a music store like The Wherehouse and get another cd about $4.00 cheaper. I kinda have a hard time calling her music straight up jazz. Unless you want to place her in the sub-category of smooth jazz, just to be on the safe side.

1) Yes, her music is mood music. It's perfect as background at work when you are stressed, and you need some sound to calm you down.

2) I've only listened to my copy of her cd in its entirety less than 10 times in about 3 or 4 months, which is another reason why I wouldn't be able to do a track by track review. I do like certain tracks more than others at this time, but I don't know the titles or lyrics so I can't share that right now alto I think the ones I like include tracks 5 and 9 off the top of my head. Track by track reviews don't influence me to buy the music because what one person hears may differ from what you or anybody else may hear. I'd rather take an overall review or interpretation, and leave the rest to my own interpretation without or very little outside influence. It has definitely has grown on me due to media exposure. I hear her music on stations that play mostly classic/modern rock, smooth jazz, or adult contemporary.

3) Don't worry about taking her too seriously. How many artists out there today can honestly be taken seriously? At the same time I don't consider her a joke. I generally like her voice and the laid back style of the music. It's not the common sound out today.

4) If you MUST have a track by track breakdown, check out sites such as amazon.com.

she has a lovely voice but her songs are like musical wallpaper. its kinda like something that should be handed out with tranquilizers. it is put together *really* nicely but its basically (sleepy) style and no substance for the most part. and its not really jazz either while im at it.

That's exactly where I'm at. I listened to it maybe 3 or 4 times all the way through, enjoyed it very much, and put it on the shelf. I may pull it out again someday, but probably not someday soon.

NORAH JONES

Rundown>>>

She's a sham.

Her entire album is flat. The songs individually have no life and the album carries no weight. It wanders aimlessly and is background music for a dull, boring night.

The album was produced by Craig Street. For those aware, he produced Meshell Ndegeocello's classic "Bitter" (1999). Norah's album however, doesn't spark the same fire of Ndegeocello's gem.

The songwriting is by-the-numbers-sentimentality and quasi-ethos. Most of the emotion supposedly detailed within the record doesn't relay into the ears of the listener.

Four words: Alana did it better. Yep, Norah's vibe/voice is a rip-off of artists that are already and have-been doing it for some time now, but just didn't get the same promotional push.

"But..but, her father is Ravi Shankar!!!" Does this little tidbit of genealogical information somehow put a proverbial feather in her artistic cap? No. She gets no points for lineage here. Didn't work for Jakob and it doesn't work for her.

Norah Jones is the pseudo-folk/singer-songwriter's Alicia Keys, she's all hype, but when you strip away the promotional bark she's hollow.

What Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch supposedly are to "rock/alternative" music, Norah Jones (and her ilk: Vanessa Carlton) are to singer-songwriter/emo-chick music.

Do I recommend Norah's LP? No. Get Alana Davis' "Fortune Cookies" (2001) instead. It is way better than this album. I've already bought two copies of it and I have one on back up.

Her Rickey Lee Jones Meets Diana Krall Vibe kinda leaves me a bit empty in spots IMHO.I prefered Her Live Performance on line last year with Charlie Hunter I Believe His Name is?I saw a Live Performance with Her& Hunter who is a Guitar Player&got More Feeling from her Playing&Singing with Him than Her own Stuff IMHO.She isn't badd but She I can see another 50 in any City or Yoru Town doing the same thing.

It seems to me that there is a lot of musical snobbery when it comes to jazz. Does it really matter whether Come Away With Me can be classified as jazz? If it could would that make it any better? Jazz fans have got to be the most pretentious going around, and quite frankly if this album is disowned by wannabe jazz critics then all the better.

Personally I think Norah Jones' debut is wonderful. It's for country and blues fans, not artsy, vacuous wankers. The album is very understated and mellow, for sure, but for me this does not translate into boring. This isn't bullshit mellow jazz that's all image and worthy only for the background music of a coffeeshop. Her voice is soulful and beautiful. The playing is nuanced. Standouts for me are Don't Know Why, the title track, One Flight Down and The Long Day Is Over. It would be pointless for me to go through every track- if I could describe the feeling of listening to each song then you wouldn't need musicians in the first place. Which isn't to say that I don't enjoy album reviews- only that it is a bit naive to expect that you will be able to see whether you will like an album by reading someone else's description of the songs. Reviews are good for either a general impression of quality before you have heard the album, and (especially) comparing one's own responses after hearing it. Every record store allows you to listen to the CDs before you buy them- if you're interested off you go and do it.
