Johnny Mathis' unreleased CHIC album

A second track has been "anonymously" leaked. Here's a link to a short clip of "Sing".

Not too bad.

Anyway, I thought Johnny owned his masters now? I thought he signed a deal like Bruce, MJ and Billy Joel to own his masters?

Yeah,in 1981,Bernard and Niles produced an album for Johnny Mathis. It is titled 'I Love My Lady' and consisted of these 8 tracks:

"I Love My Lady"
"I Want To Fall In Love"
"It's Alright To Love Me"
"Judy"
"Love And Be Loved"
"Sing"
"Take Me"
"Go With The Flow"

A year earlier, they had re-vived Diana Rossl career and gave her the most successful album of her career. They attempted to do the same with Mathis but his record label (Columbia) rejected it....they felt it would alienate his fans.

The site is requesting for you to email Columbia and ask for the project to be released.

I could see what the label means. Johnny comes from a different generation than Diana. I hope Columbia releases this. It seems like a good project.

I understand it too but if they don't like it they just wouldn't buy it. I don't think it would have ended his career. Why couldn't they have released a strong single to test the waters so they wouldn't lose too much money or maybe they didn't do stuff like that back then. shrug I don't know. I just think labels play it safe so often thus limiting the artist and what the consumer may want to hear.

They think you're stupid and easily confused.
The same reason why they'll try and convince bands with multiple singers that they need to focus on one voice.
(Chicago is a prime example that quickly comes to mind)
I guess they never heard of successful groups like The Beatles or The Temptations. disbelief

Regarding Nile Rodgers and Chic, the other night Ovation TV aired Montreux Jazz Festival 2004 featuring an edition of Chic with Omar Hakim on drums. They sounded very good.

The other performers were Seal, Patti LaBelle, Spearhead & John McLaughlin's Shakti.

It'll air again 2/20, 3/19 & 3/20.

I just think that,at this point, there is no reason NOT to release it.I'm not a huge fan of Johhny, but as a Chic fan,I'd love to hear it lol Wanna hear what they came up with.

Sounds promising! music Most likely, this album would have alienated his pop fans, but I think it would have done well with R&B audiences. It would have been the funkiest album that Johnny ever released! Is that Luther we hear on backup vocals?

I listened to Love My Lady, I think it's okay. It could have needed more work I think, sounds totally stripped down for Chic, unusual but it reminds me too much of Strike Up The Band (or however the last track of their first album's called).

Great track exclaim Thanks for the links therevolutionwillnotbe and Soulalive.

Add the unreleased project of Fonzi Thornton to the mix :

"(Stockholm 12/12 08) CHIC fan Wouter Heijke mailed me, a couple of days ago, and said he had found the track list of the unreleased CHIC project featuring CHIC choir leader Fonzi Thornton supposedly done in 1982. I was understandibly very excited. The info comes from the US Copyright Database. It seems that the Fonzi album was done in 1981, and it did include "I Work For A Livin'" and "Riding" both released as part of the soundtrack for the movie "Soup For One" (1982) "Riding" was however not on the soundtrack album. As far as I know the album, except the two above mentioned tracks were never finished, but was a collection of demo's that Nile & Nard were shopping around record co.'s with, trying to get a record deal for Fonzi. This didn't happen so most of the project was shelved. However the demo's still exist. According to the database, the album was entitled "Don't Throw My Love Away".

To Nile Rodgers: I would like to say that we fans want this album released even if it's in demo form. In fact we want it in any shape or form. Why not release it as a digital download ? That seems to be the most cost-effective way for you to get it out.

It's most likely Fonzi Thornton. He was CHIC's main male backup vocalist. He's on every CHIC project since 'Risque'. They even gave him the lead on "You Can't Do It Alone" from 'Real People'. If you sign up to access Nile's website ( www.nilerodgers.com ) you'll find a short video of Fonzi in the studio with Nile and Bernard working on a track from Johnny's album called "Love And Be Loved".
