Simply Red: Money's Too Tight To Mention

Sign O The Times Y'all. neutral

I been laid off from work my rent is due
My kids all need brand new shoes
So I went to the bank to see what they could do
They said son looks like bad luck got a hold on you

Moneys too tight to mention
I cant get an unemployment extension
Moneys too tight to mention

I went to my brother to see what he could do
He said brother Id like to help but Im unable to
So called on my father, father
Almighty father, he said

Moneys too tight to mention
Oh money money money money
Moneys too tight to mention
I cant even qualify for my pension

Were talking bout reaganomics (and fucking Bush too!)
Oh lord down in the congress
Theyre passing all kinds of bills
From up there on capitol hill, weve tried it

Moneys too tight to mention
Oh money money money money
Moneys too tight to mention
Cutbacks!

Were talking bout the dollar bill
And that old man whos over the hill
Now what are we all to do
When moneys got a hold on you

Moneys too tight etc.

Were talking bout money money
Were talking bout money money

I remember when this song came out and most radio would not play it because it was deemed to controversial and the line "old man on the hill" was considered offensive. Simply Red were pretty much blacklisted in america because of this.

I love this song.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

The original is funkier.

Hell, it's just Funky.

Simply Red's version isn't...that's not to say it's crap though.

I never knew this was a cover & i`m a big funk fan.I love this original version.Finding out stuff like this is why I return to this site time & time again.Although I have a great affection for Simply Red as they were the first gig I ever went to.It was my 14th birhday & Terence Trent D`arby supported them.Happy times!!

With the state of the world today, the lyrics just jumped out of the speakers.

I remember this singer and he had a beautiful voice. I've always wondered what happened to him. Well, speaking the truth against the injustices of the government will always be controversial.

I knew what happened to him, he became a superstar in Europe. SimplyRed weren't totally blacklisted (they had a big hit years after this with their cover of the Blue Notes' "If You Don't Love Me By Now") in America but they were under-appreciated. One of their last hits was "So Not Over You".

I think this is their last hit. I love it.

BTW the last album is awsome, too. There a great song on similar topis called Home Loan Blues.

they were part of a long list of 80's groups/singers that kept on going in other countries while being dismissed in the USA as nothing more than a one-hit wonder so to speak, Simply Red were almost considered a "covers" band in this country and not real, i think "STARS" is still their defining moment of work. Simple Minds are another band dismissed in the USA for political stances taken, QUEEN was dismissed because of its "gay" lead singer, though were the biggest band in the world and still remain to be with their catalog worldwide.

Yeah I saw the Queen biography and I was actually astonished that they were shunned because of that, which is ridiculous and prejudiced. The American music industry is so stupid sometimes.

Yeah, but some of us Americanos made the effort to support the shunned. Most of my favorite soul voices were rarely played blue eyed Brits - including Mick, Paul Weller, George Michael, Annie Lennox, Boy George, Helen Terry, Julia Fordham, etc etc

Mick Hucknall.
Simply Red never went away, they just had more hits in Europe. As far as I know they still get airplay, esp. 'If You Don't Know me by Now.'

#1, 'Another One Bites the Dust.'

Boehmian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions/We Will Rock You,

When were they ever dismissed in the U.S.?

Back in those days, if you were gay, hollywood and the public kept it under wraps. They felt that it would ruin their image. Today, if you come out, it's party time.

Hmm, I don't think Freddie ever publicly came out as homosexual. For the longest, it was said Freddie was bi at least since he had a close relationship with Mary Watson. His last lover was a man tho. I heard their video for "I Want to Break Free", which showed them all in drag, was criticized tho. That said, I think Queen is actually more appreciated in the U.S. than they were when Freddie was alive...

Strange but Waynes World has alot to do with that and of course Live Aid which not only made them stars again but also highlighted their profile to the UK and European mainstream ...they where considered ..uncool..

The other thing is the US market did the same "blacklisting" think to George Michael twice, after he came out/LA "Gay" police story and when he released AS with Mary JB and when he did Shoot the Dog... wink

Of course George has been proven right both times... biggrin
