A Soul Survivor- The Bobby Womack Thread

You know we got to give it up for this great writer/singer. Bobby is one of the most brutally honest songwriters in the history of soul music. Bobby was one of those wild soulmen who used to party and chase women with the likes of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding.

Growing up back in tha day, I had no choice but to like Womack. My pops would play his 45 rpm "Harry Hippie" to death. In fact, he played it so much he wore the darn record out and had to buy another 45 record of this track.

I have grown to love and admire the brutal tell-it-like-it- is honesty he conveys in his songs. He pulled a lot of his biggest hit songs out of his personal experiences...songs like Harry Hipppie(about his brother) "Stop On By"(him moving in on one of his best buddies girlfriend), "That's The Way I Feel About Cha"(about a hard relationship he was having with his woman at the time) and "I Wish You Didn't Trust Me So Much"(once again making the moves on one of his buddies girlfriend")were autobiographical.

But what I truly love is this man's voice. Bobby's voice is the closest thing I can think of to that of a baptist minister. His voice is rugged and harsh, conveying such emotion. And at the end of a song when he releases one of those liberating trademark screams of his, you know that the brother means business and you FEEL his point.

He has made some great sometimes overlooked R&B records in his career. Let's show Mr.Womack some love.

Bobbys' voice is like fried chicken (like Arethas' is). These fools at the pre-holiday get down were just croonin their assses off to KC and Jojos rolleyes version of If You Think You're Lonely Now...gawd the humanity of it all! Lookin For A Love bests Love Train by the Ojays too if it ever got the same airplay. Bobby is sooo underrated (except by the Stones who used his skills in their 94-97 albums, or 86 was it) and when he is gone folks are opnly then going ot come out fo the woodwork praising him. Hell, even Tarantino used his amazing Across 110th St for the opening to his Jackie Brown! My parents seen the movie Across 110 back in 72.
