Wow, that's more good songs in one week of charts than we've had in the last 5 years.
It's funny looking at that chart and knowing Prince was just a couple months away from completely dominating it.

thoughts from this week in 1984....
Genesis ...Phil Collins would never make it on his own Cyndi Lauper... what a wacky chick . Nice novelty act. Holiday .... Nice song. Who the hell is Madonna, though? . One hit wonder im sure Paul McCartney should retire already. Boy George. ...gee I wonder where he'll be in 25 years?

It's so easy to get nostalgic about music and the 1980's did have some terrible moments but that chart is fascinating to look at as there are so many great songs on there. Popular music is never going to scale the heights of the 1980s again. [Edited 2/5/09 19:31pm]

[Edited 2/5/09 19:31pm] The 80s were the bomb musically. Even one hit wonders or novelty acts had to bring the talent to chart. Those days are long gone.

You would have loved 1984.The 'Thriller' phenomenon was unlike anything I had ever seen. And then, that summer,Prince came out with 'Purple Rain'.It was an incredible time for pop music! I'm glad I was there to witness it.

What jumps out at me is how much melody has declined in pop music from '84 to where we are today in favour of rhythm & production techniques. I like a lot of the songs on this list, & absolutely love a few of them (jump, owner of a lonely heart) - but even on the tracks I don't care for I think I would have to say that almost every one of them has a clear, memorable melody. I'm not totally clued into the top 40 anymore, but I'm pretty sure you couldn't say that about this week's list.

I was born that year about two months later!
Wished I was born a decade earlier, lol.

The ones I highlighted are the ones I like:
1 1 Culture Club Karma Chameleon 2 4 Kool & the Gang Joanna 3 3 The Romantics Talking In Your Sleep 4 2 Yes Owner Of A Lonely Heart 5 11 Van Halen Jump 6 8 Genesis That s All 7 7 Lionel Richie Running With The Night 8 10 John Mellencamp Pink Houses 9 9 Christopher Cross Think Of Laura 10 6 Elton John I Guess That s Why They Call It The Blues 11 5 Matthew Wilder Break My Stride 12 18 Nena 99 Luftballons 13 14 Shannon Let The Music Play 14 15 Billy Joel An Innocent Man 15 21 Cyndi Lauper Girls Just Want To Have Fun 16 12 Ray Parker Jr. I Still Can t Get Over Loving You 17 22 John Lennon Nobody Told Me 18 19 The Police Wrapped Around Your Finger 19 20 Pretenders Middle Of The Road 20 0 Michael Jackson Thriller 21 23 James Ingram With Michael McDonald Yah Mo B There 22 16 Madonna Holiday 23 24 Paul McCartney So Bad 24 13 Paul McCartney And Michael Jackson Say Say Say 25 29 Duran Duran New Moon On Monday 26 31 Huey Lewis I Want A New Drug 27 32 Christine McVie Got A Hold On Me 28 39 Eurythmics Here Comes The Rain Again 29 30 Real Life Send Me An Angel 30 17 Olivia Newton-John Twist Of Fate 31 35 Quiet Riot Bang Your Head (Metal Health) 32 36 Kenny Rogers This Woman 33 52 Rockwell Somebody s Watching Me 34 33 Stevie Nicks Nightbird 35 37 K.C. Give It Up 36 41 Kenny Loggins Footloose 37 38 Irene Cara The Dream 38 42 Sheena Easton Almost Over You 39 59 Dan Fogelberg The Language Of Love 40 63 The Pointer Sisters Automatic Just look how many good songs are in that list and that's just the pop chart, just imagine if it were the R&B chart back then. Every era has some shitty songs but just look at that list, the majority of the songs are good and believe me, you didn't have to go "search" or "look for" good music because it came to you. It's the total opposite these days and rediculous that there's not even one good song in the charts. . . . [Edited 2/6/09 7:29am] Andy is a four letter word.
