You'll have to pardon my ignorance, but what is the BNP racist party?

And as much has Clapton has had friends like Jimi, B.B., Buddy Guy, Nathan East, Greg Phillaghanes, Herbert Sumlin, Howlin Wolf, Carlos Santana, D'Angelo, Nile Rodgers (and countless others), I don't understand how he (of all people)can be racist.

Jerry Lee Lewis? Yes..Phil from Pantera?..Yes...Lemmy from Motorhead?..maybe.
Clapton?..Not too sure of that.

And if it's true he's a racist, then that sucks.

While I love Clapton, WTF are you talking about?

Instead of standing in one place he walks in front of the amps to get feedback.

"Wild on the guitar" falloff

Well, since it's come up.... It's the British National Party, the main far-right party in the UK. The thing is, though, I'm not aware of him being linked to them per se, but in the 70s he did go on a drunken rant one night on stage, saying, "'I think Enoch's right ... we should send them all back. Throw the wogs out! Keep Britain White!'" "Wog" is a racist epithet - pretty much the British equivalent of the N-word - and "keep Britain White" was a slogan of the National Front, which was the far-right, Whites-only party that was kind of a predecessor to the BNP, and which proposed compulsory repatriation for the Black and Asian population that had settled in the UK after WWII (the main source of the non-White population here, basically, especially then). The remarks were one of the motivating factors in the creation of the Rock Against Racism campaign, which used to organise free concerts, events, etc, in the late 70s/80s, and was part of a really important anti-racist cultural movement here.

"Enoch" is Enoch Powell, a Conservative politician that made a very famous speech in 1968, usually referred to as the 'Rivers of Blood' speech, in which he spelt out his grim, almost apocalyptic, predictions about the socially disastrous effects of continued immigration from the Commonwealth countries that had formerly been colonised by Britain. (Very good documentary about it here.) It's an iconic speech and he's an iconic figure in British history: if you voice support for Enoch Powell, you're placing yourself quite definitely on one side of a certain line on racism. And Clapton's continued to voice his support for Powell even in recent interviews.

Quite how it hasn't dogged his career more, I really don't know. I only read about it last year, and I'd been gaily buying his records for years. Doesn't sit too well with the fact that he's basically made his fortune appropriating the music of black people (albeit black Americans), but the odd logical contradiction's never stopped a good bit of racism before.

That's a lame excuse. If his wife was approached by a white guy, I doubt he'd go into a drunken tirade against the white race. Alcohol is the great revealer, and Clapton showed his true colors that night. Fuck him.

Shit, black music made this fucker a lot of money. Doesn't mean he likes black folks deep down. And he still supports slime like Powell, so my opinion of him hasn't changed.

I have never understood the fuss over Eric Clapton's playing, and I never will..

Seriously, there are tons of electric blues or blues-rock guitarists out there that put him to shame, not to mention the thousands of amateur guitarists tearing it up in tiny clubs every week whilst he's stood there stock still on stage looking like a history teacher*.

...Deserted Cities of the Heart

...Strange Brew ("borrowing" heavily from Albert King)

One of my fav guitarists. Just love his sound. I love his solo on "grand illusion". Beautiful.

About the BNP thing, well, thats more political then racial I think. Quite odd to be a racist considering the amount of black people he likes (and they like him). Its still a stupid thing to do, and the BNP party suck bigtime, but I think its more about immigration issues really?

Who knows, who cares? Chuck Berry did an underage girl, still doesn't take shit away from his lagacy and shouldn't affect how you hear his music.
