Bowie Night at the local gay club tonight Just thought I should report back on how the 2nd annual Bowie Night at Celebrities here in Vancouver went.
To clarify why this was such a remarkable event, I think I should point out that this is, under normal circumstances, the sort of club that plays a lot of Rihanna and Britney and is home to scene squeens and underaged twinks. Jolly. But tonight? Oh, heaven. The theme was Bowie. The crowd was alt. And it was beautiful. There was a lot of ol' Mr. Jones' tunage being cranked, of course. But there was also a hefty dose of Blondie, Bauhaus, Lou Reed, Rammstein, Siouxsie, T-Rex, Iggy, The Clash, Bjork, Devo, Placebo, Madonna, Prince (I 'bout died when a remix of A Love Bizarre came on) and a whole load of eletronica, new wave, punk, and industrial I am happy to report I didn't even recognize. It's always a pleasure when going out not just to hear the same ol', same ol'. There was this lovely, lithe young male creature who showed up in nothing but skintight jeans and multi-coloured stars and lightning bolts painted all over his torso. A curvalicious chica dressed like a baby doll, complete with giant lolly. Two profoundly femme goth boys who spent the whole night in what almost looked like a choreographed dance. Normally I wouldn't get myself all worked up over this sort of thing, but given the normal clientele and music at this place it was a refreshing, if impermanent, change.
