Hey y'all, just surfing looking for a specific article for my updated website, and ran across this thread. Thanks to all of you who gave us props here. You are the reason that we can continue to do what we do despite an industry that is eating it's own.

Sandra, you are the bomb baby! I thought you were supposed to reunite with the Stand to release another CD in 2008? We're still waiting on it!

WOW! SSV is on this thread AWESOME....I love The Family Stand IMO they are so underrated, they are first rate singer/songwriters & producers out there. I also LOVED SSV solo CD's as well. Mack Diva Saves The World & Gemini: Both Sides Great listens.

You guys are awesome. PFunkJazz has it right, Super Sol Nova was released in Europe and on iTunes.
Our next project "Definition" will be released in the US in '09.

Mad props on the knowledge!

It should also be noted that Common did a "remake" of this song in 2000 on his "Like Water For Chocolate" album.

D'Angelo sang the hook,

"Get your hair done, it's time to go & get your hair done..."

I mean "Ghetto heaven, it's time to get some ghetto heaven."

On later pressings of the album, they replaced that version with a remix.

This time Macy Gray sang the hook.

Thats just crazy ... their biggest "world-wide" hit was remixed buy a British R&B group...Soul II Soul ...i'm sure if you ask the TFS they will tell how much they love the brits..and our R&B

....if that's the case you don't like the stones, beatles, bowie, amy, Jay Kay....etc...and i've not even touched the black british artists...Omar, Noel Mckoy, Lynden, Floerty....etc..should i go on... lol lol

I take it you don't like Jill Scott... Angie...Maxwell...their style of Nu-Classic-Soul was a take on the british R&B acts music of the time... biggrin

I really do not like Brits or Yanks or anyone putting down British R&B, Reggae, Jazz, House, Rap, Hip-Hop acts...because it's too easy ...they have limited record company power to promote them and industry bias ...as well as the "well you don't come from around here lot" mad peace.. biggrin

It wasn't a remake but he sampled the chorus.

I'm sorry you don't like it but that's how i feel. The rock stuff is good, but the swipes at r&b, reaggae, jazz are boring and trite. I do not listen to neo-soul artists either. They're not quite trite but they don't interest me.

Yea Sandra you need to come out and tour West Coast clubs. Vernon Corey Will and Doug are working on a record for summer '09. Both bands should consider touring together.

Man i'm sorry you "feel" this way ... but those boxes you create will only stop you hearing the good stuff and the UK produces some of the best stuff ...hence the term "breaking the US market" something US artist never have to do in the UK if they are good we just jump in...it's sad that these walls are built but then again that's why the quality of music from the UK is so high...cuz we know we have to break them down ... cool

Missed their first, under the name Evon Jeffries and the stand.

Very, very much of its time. At the peak of synth/midi era. Its definately very programmed. I love alot of it (as I love those synths), but its alot more commercial (which, like Prince, they have never been afraid of being at times). Album definately is more hi-tech (or has a bigger budget), then "chains". I prefer it over "chains" as a whole actually. No rock influences though.

Sort of.

When a rapper gets an artist to sing the chorus from another song, that's not classified as a "sample" as such, it's usually stated as "re-sung elements" or an interpolation something like that. If it were literally a sample, the original song would be incoroprated into the new creation, but in this case the song bares the same name as the original, which is why I put the word "remake" in inverted commas.

I'll just tip my hat to Brits as fans, they certainly know how to turn out for new talent, but the r&b and jazz they import is too much like pastiche. It may dazzle but after burnishing and it fades. I find Soul II Soul very unlistenable nowadays.

The Brand New Heavies' material still sounds fresh to me after all these years. "Never Stop" is one of my very favorite R&B singles of the '90s.

I like Brother Sister and, when I'm in the mood, Heavy Rhyme Experience. I have the reunion album, but I never got into it. I should give it a spin one day...
