When I told people my musical likes and how I explain things, people were like "are you really that YOUNG!?!" They're just surprised someone like me would be into "old stuff". I don't look at songs like "Sexy Mama" as "old", I look at them as "the best music I ever heard". But yeah I'm an '84 baby!

Anyway I just want to say thanks for the nostalgia...6th grader that year. It makes me kinda weepy-eyed. I loved at least half of the list. Yeah,KBLX never plays Madonna, but it's nice hearing her on an R&B station (KISS-98.1) since that's really where it all began for her. "weepy-eyed",huh? Yeah,I miss that era, too. You never really know how amazing something is until it's gone.

That's very true. In 1984 the Thriller singles had almost run out, but then Michael was also on hit songs by Paul McCartney and Rockwell so by the time the Jacksons' "Torture" was released and didn't even make the top 10, people were saying Michael needs to take a break.

1984 was an excellent year in music. MJ was still big, Prince reigned the charts (it was HIS year), Madonna became more and more famous and George Michael ruled the charts as well (he had three US#1 and one top three, in the UK he had 3# 1s and one #2) that's not bad either!!!

You ain't lying! Plus,in my area, there were a few other MJ-related songs that got alot of airplay in 83/84: ***"Superstar" by Lydia Murdock (1983)---the "Billie Jean" answer record. ***"Do It Again,Billie Jean" (1983)---a mashup of Steely Dan's "Do It Again" with the music of "Billie Jean". ***"Dear Michael" by Kim Fields (1984)---a tribute record by "Tootie" from 'The Facts Of Life'.She took one of his old 70s songs, changed the lyrics and came up with a new song dedicated to him. ***"Centipede" by Rebbie Jean (1984)---Michael wrote and produced this excellent track, and I think he's singing background vocals on the chorus, too. ***"Farewell My Summer Love" by Michael Jackson(1984)---Just as the Jacksons were gearing up for their 'Victory' tour and album,Motown pulled this old song out of the vaults and re-released it in the spring of '84.They were trying to "cash in" on the enormous MJ hype.

1 1 Culture Club Karma Chameleon You know, I was all set to rail against the current state of pop music; and how the music of yore must be superior to today's music. I was pretty sure that I knew without a doubt, that what was popular a generation ago, was artistically superior. I was Wrong. The number one song in the county today is Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You" and honestly, I don't think it's an inferior piece of art when compared to "Karma Chameleon." Both are passable songs - granted, Boy George infuses his number one hit with much more individuality and personal expression (Clarkson's singing, although she's obviously talented, remains faceless and without a trace of personal expression) but as a songwriter, I'm searching to find traces of superior craftsmanship in the former and it's a struggle. Both are equal in terms of artistic merit, in my opinion. I think "Karma Chameleon" is a perfectly crafted,well-written pop song.Insanely catchy too.Still,my favorite Culture Club song remains "Time (Clock Of The Heart)",a brilliant song that puts today's pop singles to shame.
