I think it was more the music on that song than the voice. The music had kind of an underground "dance music" feel to it. White stations wouldn't touch anything that had a dance feel to it because they were still hating disco which had "died" a few years earlier (to let them tell it) but black stations embraced some of the "dance" artists such as Freeeze. When she showed her lily white hide on American Bandstand we was shocked. Still loves me some Madonna though.

I like a lot of the songs on this list, & absolutely love a few of them (jump, owner of a lonely heart) - but even on the tracks I don't care for I think I would have to say that almost every one of them has a clear, memorable melody. I'm not totally clued into the top 40 anymore, but I'm pretty sure you couldn't say that about this week's list.
Exactly! Back in the day, songs had a clear, memorable melody. And because of that, they are much more memorable. I don't see many songs today having long lives as recurrents in the future.

1 1 Culture Club Karma Chameleon You know, I was all set to rail against the current state of pop music; and how the music of yore must be superior to today's music. I was pretty sure that I knew without a doubt, that what was popular a generation ago, was artistically superior. I was Wrong. The number one song in the county today is Kelly Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You" and honestly, I don't think it's an inferior piece of art when compared to "Karma Chameleon." Both are passable songs - granted, Boy George infuses his number one hit with much more individuality and personal expression (Clarkson's singing, although she's obviously talented, remains faceless and without a trace of personal expression) but as a songwriter, I'm searching to find traces of superior craftsmanship in the former and it's a struggle. Both are equal in terms of artistic merit, in my opinion.

The voice is the last thing I notice in music unless the person sounds extremely horrible like Biz Markie singing "Youuuuu....you got what I neeeeed....Ooooooh baby youuuuu". Other than that, the bassline, drums, handclaps, or any of the other ass shakin' elements usually catch my ear first. Andy is a four letter word.

Well i said it before but i will say it again, the charts from them show HOW those times were, free to do what you wanted, showed the mainstream filters of music let everything go, there was no AGE-ISM, you could have a 40+ year old on the radio without it being an oldies or LITE station. And you had diversity, you didnt have the consolidation of music that PRINCE spoke of (and everyone said he was preaching, but hey, it was truth) you will NEVER EVER again have the mixtures that we once had, its over, we are more now "put into boxes and categories" than ever before, there was far more freedom then than now. That list is amazing! Just look at all the great or at least good pop songs on there!! (OK, there are also a handful I could live without!) It belabors the obvious to say you can't turn on the radio and hear stuff like that anymore. BTW, I was in my last semester of high school then. You would have loved 1984.The 'Thriller' phenomenon was unlike anything I had ever seen. And then, that summer,Prince came out with 'Purple Rain'.It was an incredible time for pop music! I'm glad I was there to witness it. I wonder... With how Michael and Prince were everywhere, was it overexposure like Beyonce or was just straight up love for them? Kiss FM and KBLX STILL play Lucky Star and Holiday I'm assuming the two stations are SF based. Actually I don't think KBLX plays Madonna, unless I conveniently blocked her out. Now Star 101.3 definitely plays those songs alot. Anyway I just want to say thanks for the nostalgia...6th grader that year. It makes me kinda weepy-eyed. I loved at least half of the list.
