The albums that never were: You're The Man and Love Man by Marvin Gaye

Do you know these albums? I think the YTM album wuld have been fantastic! The World Is Rated X, Where Are We Going (!!!), Give Me Respect and the title track and everything else are simply amazing. Put My Last Chance (just gorgeuous) to it and it would have been another classic album!!!

Why do you think he felt dissatisfied with it?

Love Man... is not really disco or dancey? It's more soul than disco, but that doesn't make it bad.
But the reworks did the song really well, Dance'n'Be Happy for example is nice, but not as good as Love Party.

Are the only songs we know he worked on after ML (1982) on Dream Of A Lifetime ???

Timmy84, let's see how long this one will last

Man I feel those albums would've only added to his repertoire. Motown shelved the first one because the title track didn't do so well because of its attack on politics in general. The second one Marvin only shelved because he didn't like the lyrical matter.

I know about the 'Love Man' project, which was planned for release in 1979.

But,I don't know about the 'You're The Man' project. What year is it from? Is it a finished album that is still in the vaults?

It was planned for 1972 and most of the material was on the deluxe edition set of Let's Get It On.

But most songs on You're The Man are not political at all. rated X, yes, Where Are We Going only slightly and the beautiful melody makes the content up.
Well, one of the songs is about BJs, right?
And it would have been easy to rename the album??? Where Are we Going. Would have been "What's Going On" pt 2!

There were recording difficulties, yes. And Marvin did have plans to make another political album but since he had writer's block at the time (he had to have other people writing some of the material for him as far as his ideas went), he felt like he couldn't deliver as well as he could so it could be possible that HE shelved it. Who knows? Marvin was recording a lot of material in 1972.

And no the song about BJs appear in "I Want You" ("Soon I'll Be Loving You Again"), I'm not too sure about BJ-type songs in 1972. lol Marvin hadn't explored that explicit side yet. lol

I understand he suffered writer's block. But honestly, did he write much of (the song) Let's Get It On? (Or the I Want You album!!!) Well, okay, at least his influence was probably higher than in Where Are We Going. Anyway, he had soem nice songs, no who cares who wrote them. I like Grapevinde too, and he didn't write it.

With the BJ song I meant Try It, You'll Like It. I always imagined he talks about his cock.
