Super Bowl Halftime Shows?

Did Janet Ruin Super Bowl Halftime Shows for the Urban Audience?
Posted Jan 29th 2009 2:00PM by Quibian Salazar-Moreno
Filed under: Casually Obsessed, Sports

The halftime show for Super Bowl XXXVIII featured Jessica Simpson, Nelly, P. Diddy, Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson.

We're all know what happened with the 'wardrobe malfunction' but lately it looks like the controversy was not only detrimental to CBS' pockets and Janet's career, but also to the young urban NFL fans. Since the incident in 2004, Super Bowl Halftime shows have targeted the older, mostly white, baby boomer crowds.

Despite having Prince offer up probably the best Super Bowl halftime show since Michael Jackson's 1993 performance, halftime during the Super Bowl have been lackluster as of late. ...

Since Janet's incident we've had Paul McCartney (2005), The Rolling Stones (2006), Prince (2007), Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers (2008) and this year we have Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

Except for Prince, did anyone under the age of 40 stick around to watch these? I'm sure folks like Alicia Keys, Rihanna, Kanye West, Beyonce, Ne-Yo, Usher, T.I., Leona Lewis and too many others to list, aren't too busy on Sunday, how come no one is calling them? Looks like halftime will be the best time to use the bathroom during this year's Super Bowl.

To be honest, this 24-year-old black, "urban" male rather look at the older rock artists... I could care less if Usher is on it. So maybe I can thank Janet for that, lol.

before Janet, we had acts like Britney and Nsync and Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, etc. so it wasn't exactly "young urban" before Janet's titty ruined America

and they're being generous with the "except for Prince, did anyone under 40 stick around" comment.

for that matter, by 2004 would anyone have classified Janet as a draw for "young urban" audiences?

Hells naw. lol Janet was already past the age for "young urban audiences" yet her sound was and is still stuck at the pre-35-49 age group, lol. lol It was good for my 20-year-old butt at the time, now I can't bare listening to that or "20 Y.O.". eek lol

I did too. I also thought Tom Petty was very good last year as well. I know he's not the most dynamic performer, but he played his best songs & he played them well. The only act I'd single out for criticism would be the Stones, who I thought were terribly sloppy.

It's the super bowl - I would expect the talent to be middle-america-centric. I don't expect them to put on marxist art terrorists or anything.

Exactly. To be honest I was quite surprised when they let MTV handle things, usually many of the acts that were on there were "middle-America centric". lol They tried the MTV format for three years until the Janet-Justin flap.

I didn't care for Paul, but I did enjoy Tom Petty.

I hope that Bruce is decent and doesn't bore us to death with political songs.

I just hope he doesn't do "the rising" again. He just did it last week at the inaugural. That was enough.

Knowing Bruce, he probably will. lol But since we got a new president, if he didn't do the political stuff, at LEAST he wouldn't be criticized for being "unpatriotic". falloff

The SB should be about football. That halftime nonsense is way overblown.

Give up on that hope. That was Obama's official campaign song, and with Bruce doing cartwheels about the election result, there's no way he'll be able to resist commemorating the moment with another rendition of that overrated little number.

For people like me, they could care less about the game. I care more for the half time show and the commercials. I don't care for sports.

They were all a big ol' snooze fest. yawn Superbowl halftime shows are not about music appreacition. They are about bringing the spectacle and putting on a show. It's great when there's a balance between showmanship and musicality, like with Prince's show, but that rarely happens.

For me, I want to be entertained for the halftime show. Some of my most memorable half time shows are the ones where something "special" happened. For instance, I'll never forget Diana Ross flying off in the helicopter, MJ performing heal the world with the pre-school drawings, or Prince singing in the Purple Rain. That's what it's about to me. I really hope Bruce brings it.

Super Bowl Halftime shows are ok but it can be too much of a spectacle that's not necessary. There have been a few good ones like MJ, U2 and of course Prince, which was the best one that make them worth it. I'm sure Bruce will put on a good show on Sunday. It won't be like Prince but it'll be good enough, I'm sure lol
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

nod Exactly, spectacle. I saw Bruce last year at AAC and it was a good show, but do I wanna see that at Superbowl, not necessarily. But I do think he'll be much better than Tom Petty. bored

He doesn't have to do much to outdo Tom or Paul McCartney. They were both boring as hell to me. I think Paul was the most boring halftime show of the last 10 years.

There are many good points on this thread.
I didn't really get into
the halftime performances except Prince's great
halftime performance.
I do remember watching Kid Rock and I think
Run DMC performed with him,
I don't remember, but that was a good show.
I agree that they
do hype the halftime shows and commercials that
they are paying
over 3 million dollars for and for
30 seconds at that eek eek -
Many of the commercials are stupid anyway.

shrug I thought Paul was the best outside of Prince. He sang good songs and sang them well -- that's all I need. cool

Prince's Halftime show was the first one I actually made it a point to watch since the James Brown one in N.O when the Packers played the Pats back in 97.
