Before he went on to what might be considered more traditional New Orleans music and years before the tune most folks associate him with (Right Place, Wrong Time), there was Dr. John "The Night Tripper".

His first 4 albums (especially the first) sounded like some kind of scary World/Voodoo music.
(a perfect sonic background for......hallucinogenic excursions.)
Very unique, even for the wide open Free-Form FM days of the 60s.

Unfortunately, YouTube only has a couple of tunes from his last album of this period.
No classic tunes from Gris-Gris (the album that set the tone) like the wonderfully eerie I Walk On Gilded Splinters or Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya.

However, Zu Zu Mamou gives you a feel for the vibe he started on the Gris-Gris album.

i picked up Gris Gris a couple years ago and didn't spin it nearly enough. i'll have to break this one back out.

i do remember I Walk On Gilded Splinters being a lot of fun.
