The R&B gentleman: Smart suits, old-school charm, bags of talent - no wonder Jacko wants Ne-Yo to revive his career Looks like Ne-Yo's got the girls going wild....they must be tierd of being called Ho* and Bit*** that's good news...and supporting a less than hard man..
http://www.dailymail.co.u...areer.html The old saying about some guys having all the luck springs immediately to mind when one considers what American soul man Ne-Yo has been doing for the past two weeks. To promote his current album, Year Of The Gentleman, the 29-year-old singer has been on a UK tour with raunchy girl-group the Pussycat Dolls and new pop sensation Lady GaGa. 'This is the worst tour I've ever been on,' he sighs - with a heavy helping of irony - backstage at London's O2 Arena. 'I'm on the road with six incredibly glamorous women. I just can't take it! 'The Pussycat Dolls are actually a very friendly bunch. When you see how they look in their photos, you might expect them to have egos the size of this room. But they are regular girls. Smooth: Ne-Yo, who is currently touring the UK with The Pussycat Dolls and Lady Gaga 'They just happen to be blessed with fantastic dancing ability and great looks. I haven't walked into their dressing room and seen anybody naked yet - but there are still a few dates left.' Despite his mischievous comments, Ne-Yo is not the lascivious sort. Far from it. Alongside John Legend and Kanye West, the debonair singer is one of the renaissance men of U.S. R&B and a sophisticated performer who shuns urban music's obsession with brashness and bling in favour of a return to old-fashioned values. His album, he says, is called Year Of The Gentleman for good reason. 'Being a gentleman is all about treating people with respect. A gentleman knows how to be bold and direct without being a jerk. It's a lifestyle. 'One misconception is that wearing a suit and tie turns you into a gentleman. It doesn't. It's all about what's happening on the inside. Some people say that nice guys always finish last, but I don't agree with that.' For Ne-Yo, the classier approach is certainly paying off. His first two albums went to number one in the U.S. while Closer, the first single from Year Of The Gentleman, topped the UK charts last year. And he has been shortlisted for six awards at next month's Grammy Awards in LA. Ne-Yo started writing songs when his was nine-years-old, following the break-up of his parents marriage He is also as cool as the proverbial cucumber. Despite being delayed for more than two hours by congestion in the Blackwall Tunnel in London on the way to Wednesday night's concert at the O2, the consummate professional is more than happy to chat at length only minutes before stepping out onstage. Although he was born in Arkansas, in America's Deep South, Ne-Yo - whose real name is Shaffer Smith - was raised by his mother in Las Vegas after his parents separated. The glitzy legacy of America's gambling capital has left its mark on the singer, who sees himself as an all-round entertainer in the tradition of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr and the Rat Pack, who ruled the roost in his hometown during the Sixties. 'The great thing about the Rat Pack was that they were effortlessly cool. They didn't have to try. They just had it. With them, it wasn't just the singing. You had to sing, dance and tell jokes. 'They had a swagger that you don't see often in music today. Nowadays, it's the done thing to be a little slobbish. But even when I didn't have much money, I always tried to look smart.' Ne-Yo's aversion to any form of slackness extends to his music. Fed up with what he calls 'the wave of sloppiness' that has crept into modern R&B, he looks to rock, pop and even country for additional inspiration and has been courted as a songwriter by many of the world's biggest stars. Having penned hits for Rihanna, New Kids On The Block, Céline Dion and Lionel Richie, he has now been asked to help out on major comeback albums by Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. When Jackson first called, however, Ne-Yo thought the approach was an elaborate hoax. He says: 'Someone calling himself "Mike" rang me, and I hung up because I thought it was a joke. Ten minutes later, I got a call from his manager saying that Michael Jackson really did want to talk to me. 'So we talked on the phone and met in New York. I was shaking like a leaf. He is one of my heroes and meeting him was surreal. At first, I didn't know what to say, but we soon broke the ice by chatting about music. 'Since then, I've been submitting songs and he's been picking the ones he likes. But I've no idea when the album will come out. That's a question for Michael. 'This is such a huge record for him, so he can be as picky as he likes. It's either going to be the greatest comeback ever or a really sad attempt at recapturing old glories. And we don't want it to be the latter.' Ne-Yo's collaboration with Houston is nearer completion: 'People are expecting something fantastic, and I think they're going to get it. I've been submitting songs and talking to her. 'Whitney doesn't want any sad songs on this record. She isn't going for the tear-jerkers. She's happy raising her children and wants her music to reflect that. It's already sounding great.' Ne-Yo began writing songs when he was nine, shortly after his parents split up. It was, he concedes, his way of coming to terms with the emotional upheaval. 'My father wasn't around and that left me and my sister with a lot of pent-up aggravation. He moved away and got himself a new family and forgot about us. My anger could have manifested itself in a bad way, so my mum just gave me a pen and paper and told me to write things down.' As he graduated from songwriting to singing, Ne-Yo - who takes his stage name from a character in the Hollywood sci-fi movie The Matrix - took some time to feel fully at ease with his voice. 'At first, I hated my singing. I wanted to growl like Marvin Gaye, but my voice was really high and ting-y. If it wasn't for studying Michael Jackson, I'd never have felt comfortable with it.' Signed by rapper Jay-Z to the Def Jam label, Ne-Yo was an instant success. His first two albums - In My Own Words (2006) and Because Of You (2007) - put him on the R&B map while Year Of The Gentleman cemented his reputation for diversity. Now, in keeping with the example of the Rat Pack, he is also moving into film. He is due to play a young fighter pilot in George Lucas's forthcoming World War Two epic Red Tails. The film tells the story of the Tuskegee airmen, the first African-American pilots to fly in a combat squadron. He is also co-producing a music film, Venice Beach, which he describes as 'a cross between Prince's Purple Rain and Eminem's 8 Mile'. Singing is his priority, though, with a U.S. tour following hard on the heels of his British trip. Hard working and prolific, he hasn't yet ruled out making another album this year. 'I'm sometimes seen as being boring because I don't take drugs or have affairs with celebrity women,' he says. 'If the paparazzi ever followed me, they'd catch me popping into Subway for a sandwich. 'But I love my job. It's hard to call what I do work. I'm like the child who is allowed to play video games all day. 'I'll be doing this for as long as people want to listen to me.' • Year Of The Gentleman is out now. Ne-Yo plays Cardiff International Arena with the Pussycat Dolls tonight. Da, Da, Da....Emancipation....Free..don't think I ain't..! London 21 Nights...Clap your hands...you know the rest..

Now all I can think about is Neyo in a purple pleather coat, see-through lace tank top and super baggy jeans. | |
