I noticed 30+ years ago, the same songs would be done a handful of times by different artist, maybe thousands of times.

what has happened?

an interesting part of music i feel is that artist would do the same song but try to interpret it differently.

thats not really done anymore.


do yall tink that is a missing part of the industry? or it would be "horrible" now?

For example, Neil Young would release something like "Lotta Love" on his album but than it would be covered months (or something like that) later by someone like Nicolette Larson in the seventies.

Covers aren't dead (especially everyone doing oldies) but I think what's so interesting is that while songs aren't as good as they used to be, they are so much more based on being very specific to artists, not being very universal. Although a few years ago, both "Umbrella" and "Crazy" proved that wrong.

well, there's the jazz standards that have been interpreted by almost
everyone under the sun who plays jazz

but beyond those i'm only aware of a handfull of songs that have been
recorded by more than, say, a dozen different artists. those are the
classics among the classics but they will pop up always and everytime
the occasion allows it. wether it's by established artists or covers
by new bands.

paying tribute by covering a superb oldie is of all ages, and it will
always be so.

the era of simply slapping a housebeat onto a classic song or making
a rave version of it or basically sampling it and making an r and b
cover of it are thankfully over, i think. there aren't nearly as many
horrible remakes and remixes of originals as there were up to about
5 years ago.

i mean in contemporary mainstream music. thats not really done anymore.

maybe cause more artists are trying to become songwriters so it would be too hokey/ plus they would have to give up money, of they wanted to cover another contemporary artists' song

Seriously, have you heard something of late that you want to hear over and over again in variation?

Because some of the songs released in this period are not as great, I guess...

Yeah,back in the day,you'd buy an album and several of the songs would be remakes.I can't say that I miss that.For the most part,remakes are never as good as the original.
