Lil Wayne doing rock. Could this be the most "punk" thing ever?

So we all know he's been posing with a guitar for a while and now he's doing a full on rock album. I've heard 2 tracks so far Prom Queen and Hot revolver. This is actually the most listenable music i've ever heard from him though I do like "stuntin like my daddy" and "A milli". Are you all ready for this? I am! I am happy to see more rappers try something different. I know his fans will probably hate this the way Kanye's fans don't like 808's. Now I heard even Diddy is working on a new album in the same vein as 808's. Seems that album has made some rappers re-think their careers. Good hopefully hip hop will eventually dry up and dropp off!

Check out the new Lil Wayne Single here http://www.concreteloop.com/

Peace

what up paisley yeah that's true but i think 808's really started something. that album might go down in history as a turning point for hip hop.

No, this could not be the most "punk" thing ever. The Sex Pistols and The Clash are punk. Nirvana and Green Day are punk. Lil Wayne is NOT punk.

This is what passes for a rock song in 2009?

Sweet Christ that's a downer. sad

Gotta give him a hand for trying out something new at least, but classing this song even as pop-rock would be a HUGE stretch.

It's really just a word off. Try:

The Most Crap Thing Ever".
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

A vaguely clubby pop track with some guitar. Not rock, and certainly not punk by any definition.

Some good ol' proto-punk for ya, for comparison:

Lil Wayne's effort here isn't bad, really. I think he should be commended for trying a foray out of his proven cashable field, actually. But to call the song rock? I'm sorry, but IMO it just doesn't cut it.

No, it's not "really punk" to take a risk. In fact, just the act of describing something as "really punk" makes it not punk.

And there we have it.

Punk is indeed more an attitude than a sound, but not just any ol' tune can be called punk -ESPECIALLY if the motivations behind it were commercial. And labelling something punk does take away some of the "punkness" of it as well. Johnny Cash, for example, was only punk until people started calling him so.
