From the States it was TLC followed by SWV.

But there was a French act called Native who trumps both of them. They're perhaps the only female R&B group from the '90s who are still in my steady rotation.

TLC
Destiny's Child
SWV

These have remained my favourites. I also used to like:

En Vogue
Allure
Changing Faces
Total
Xscape
Mokenstef
The Braxtons
702

I can't remember anymore, but I'm sure there were one hit wonder girl groups I liked.

What is with those not giving SWV their due. I mean, that debut album is crazy and the follow ups had their merits.

I agree, their first album is very good, but I never bought anything else from them.

highfive

The sisters broke up after Couleurs. Apparently there was not much amour between them. lol

One sister, Laura, recorded a solo album in 2000 under the name Native, but it didn't sell so well. They dropped a Best Of CD in 2002, and that was the last I've personally heard of them. The other sister, Chris, apparently has done some collaborative work with various European jazz musicians.

Oh that's too bad. Maybe I'll check out their best of. People always talk about Les Nubians and I was like pffft. You haven't heard Native!

No and now I'm curious. Is it any good? I used to look for them under Les Native. No wonder I couldn't find any info.

There's not much -- just a self-titled debut CD from 1993, and a live EP called Nat(l)ive from 1995. The debut CD has a bit more of a club feel than Couleurs, but it's pretty good. It also has an English-language cover of "Sometimes it Snows in April." thumbs up!

Really? Too bad they weren't around longer. I'm definitely going to look for their stuff. Do you listen to much French music?

I'm learning more Francophone music only in the past couple years, since I've moved to Canada. It's somewhat more "in your face" here. I've liked French acts Native, Etienne Daho and redface Francoise Hardy for a while, though. There's also a couple Quebecois singers I've followed for a bit named Corneille and Julie Crochetiere.

eek Really? They never matched the success of the debut, but they still managed to crank out quite a few hits ("You're the One," "Use Your Heart," "Someone," "Can We," "Rain").

Some stuff i noticed or bought back then :

"Krazy" is produced and co-written by Derek "D.O.A." Allen, the current bassplayer of Morris Day & the Time
"90's Girl" contains the synthbassline from Cheryl Lynn's "Encore"

Imo a very strong live-album with a solid band backing the ladies up, and they also honoured some classics on that live-recording

These 2 clips below are my fave jams from their second studio-album :

www.dailymotion.com/video...s-up_music

www.dailymotion.com/ice19...c?from=rss

Zhane has indeed recorded some great songs, especially "Crush", which has a wonderful vibe

SWV's "Rain" & laidback clip

This slowjam grooves on the sample of Whodini's "5 Minutes Of Funk"

Allure

Assorted Phlavors

For Real

Sista & Missy (lol) (Devante Swing's proteges)

Pretty In Pink, including Indira Khan (Chaka's daughter, who sings the first verse in the video)
