Joni leaves on sour note

By Liz Braun, Toronto Sun

"I'm quitting after this because the business has made itself so repugnant to me."

Joni Mitchell claims she'll just use the repugnant record business one last time to release her new double album and then, that's it for her.

It must be terrible for someone with such high principles to remain in the game just to pay the bills or stay in the limelight or exercise creative urges or please fans or whatever the trade-off is this week.

No wonder they call the music business the oldest profession in the world! One can only hope that the lovely and talented Miss Mitchell will be able to find gainful employment doing something utterly and completely different.

THERE'S ONE BORN EVERY MINUTE:

Anyone know if her new album is good? I've got a few of her older albums, but haven't explored any of her stuff from the 80's or later.

so, basically she's a hypocrite. the industry may be the pimp that runs the system, but it takes whores to make the system work. you'll notice that she's going to put out one more (double) album for the label before she calls it quites. so go ahead and bitch all you want Joni, but know that you're perpetuating all that you're whining about.

No, I'm really not. However, I really can't stand millionairs who bitch about the system that made them rich and famous. And that it isn't until they can't sell an album to save their life that they start bitching about how unfair things are. Boo hoo. Put up or shut up, I say. Now, if Joni were just simply walking away, I'd say "good for her!" Same for Tom Petty. And all the other whiners. But no, Joni's going to milk the system she decries one more time for a nice paycheck before she bows out. She's a hypocrite.

You have to put it in context. If the system hadn't changed for the worse all these recording artists wouldn't be revolting in droves. Not that I'm saying Joni will, because it seems to me that she's done this song and dance before years ago. And you also have to remember (or maybe you don't), Joni Mitchell was never a big record seller in the first place. It's not like she's complaining because she doesn't have a recent multi-platinum record. The system that made them rich is also the system that gets rich off of the hardest workers in the business - the artists themselves, and it HAS changed for the worse, and since that's the case they have every right to speak their mind and try to change things for themselves. Which is why many of them are trying to get certain things legislated for change.

Btw, this is also the system that has ripped off many recording artists over the years. So that being the case I say, SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS. Quite frankly I'm surprised it took them this long to revolt.

After what i read here & there, it seems that it is some dumb ass A&R who suggest Joni to try a more commercial sound that bring her to such a reaction.
I think she's cool and that we would have better music if more artist reacted this way.

For the worse? It's infinitely better than it used to be. At least these people have money. All those people from before the 60's didn't get paid and still aren't getting paid. Tell me how the current situation is worse than that.

I'm saying it's changed for the worse for the ones who are critical of it now. Even for some who started out before we were born. It's not that "all" the artists before the '60s didn't get paid. But just one who sells a lot of records that didn't is too many...

But I don't know of any businesses that don't go through cycles, though there should never be a cycle where people who move units off the shelf shouldn't get paid. Joni is complaining about the business end of it, that could go beyond getting paid into many other aspects.
