Personally, I think Cameo was a bit on the New Wave Tip She's Strange and What's The Word?, and you had that Guitarist from the Plasmatics Jean Bouvier, then ya had Niles Rodgers who had an album Living In The New Wave. I think Dez Dickerson was going that way, P-Funk and Bootsie, And how about Whoodini Freaks Come Out At Night? And Don't forget ANDRE CYMONE Living In The New Wave...How about PRINCE?

lol

I kew somebody would mention him,,,,,but to be honest though? He is my window through the black "new wave" movement.

I don't know if you could call Mic Murphy & The System "New Wave"(UGH, labels irks me to death) but yeah, I think I heard them being referred to as "new wave".

Thanx alot for the intersting trivia,,,,I didn't Whoodini tapped into "New Wave", I'm fimiliar with the song, I just didn't know that it was considered "new wave".

You're Welcome. Check out JOHN BOUVIER and the Plasmatics. He was way cool with a Mohawk and played a mean Guitar or BASS was it? I don't have the album near me.

Nile Rodgers' album was called a "Adventures in the Land of Good Groove."

ur thinking about Prince protege Andre Cymone with "Livin in the New Wave."

A lot of genres suddenly sounds new wave around '82-'84.

And there's a lot of stuff hard to categorize... this is hard to filter in my mind racially.

ESG?

This might be easier to answer if it was "black acts who tried out the new wave sound"

because I can't think of too many that were exclusive to the new wave which was sorta trendy.

And it seems like Prince influenced alot of this.

Fair enough nod

I rephrase that ?uestion: black acts who tried out the new wave sound,,,,who were good at it lol

Coz you know ALOT of older soul artists tried the Hip-Hop/Soul Mary J-esque sound of the 90s and it didn't do JACK SHIT to them.

Very interesting question Miss Harley.

Personally, if you mean Black artists that were totally immersed in the New Wave formula (meaning their material was completley New Wave based and didn't just incorporate elements of New Wave into their already existing style), i'd have to say the answer would be none.

Consider the fact that initially New Wave, with MTV as their primary marketing vehicle, served to (at least temporarily) visually obliterate Black artists.

Just trying to think of New Wave bands that even had Black members...

...what came to mind were The Thompson Twins (Joe Leeway)

I think a lot of synthed out 80s soul could be boxed as new wave, certainly their visual style was.

Sorta like Klymaxx.
