it's an hommage plus the writers of the original get a credit on the album

1. Any musician already knew where Salaam Remi lifted the sample from as soon as they heard this track years ago.

2. This is an example of a song that has been taught in pop courses in contemporary music schools showing how young artists bridge the gap between old and new kool in homage. Salaam was not the first to do it, so what is the true issue here? If we want to chastize, then we need to bring EV.ER.RY mofo to task that has lifted more than 8 bars off of a record for a sample.

All I'm sayin' is, let us not only begin with the young folks who managed a hit or two in the mid decade of 2000-20010

It's an interpolation. So long as the original songwriters get credit and don't mind, what's the problem?

I think it's cool when somebody takes the chords or bass from one song and arranges a new melody over the top.

p.s. 'Fast Love' by George Michael is one of my favourite interpolations.

and James Brown's "Hot (I Need To Be Loved, Loved, Loved, Loved)" is a note for note rip-off of David Bowie's "Fame"

so what's your point?

I don't get the point of this thread.

I love both songs, and i'm like, "So what?"

Has Amy been sued for this? No.

for that matter, if you read Alan Leeds' excellent liner notes for the James Brown singles collections, he traces the origins of several of JB's early songs and a whole lot of them were revampings or out-right knock-offs of songs from the 30's & 40's.

and really, I only use James Brown as an example because you've brought him up twice. shrug

I def see it, in the drums and the bells.

I dig both, like that she paid the writers, and think Tears dry is the best song Amy has done, the whole back to black album felt like an nice homage to motown era arrangements.

In fact it seems to be the new thing. Which I am ok with.

Some examples.

Ray Lamtagne You are the best thing.

James Morrison's new song

all have staxx and motown arrangements.

Much better IMO than someone rapping over a looped JB song.
Music is the best...
