Back in the early 90s, here in Southern California, we had this station called Mars radio and they played house and dance music. It was the best station but corporate hacks got a hold of it and changed the format confused

Where is WBAI? Is there a webstream? smile

You missunderstood my question, I was asking what makes House House?

How do you differentiate House from Deep House, Trip Hop, Trance, BreakBeat etc.. etc..

This is an interesting question and I don't know how to answer it! lol A Househead knows house when they hear it. One of the most frustrating things about the house movement is how many fakers tried to piggyback onto the "House" label.

House music can vary from fleshed out disco grooves to flat out hardcore deep dark tracks. What ISN'T house music is the techno crap that was so often passed off as House. You have no idea how many CDs I have bought that were labeled as deep house which were in fact Techno and electronica. The shit needs to be separate! mad

Most of what is being posted in this thread is genuine House music nod

Yeah, I know what you are saying. I know of some deeper house type stuff but I can't think of them right now. I racked my brain trying to think of those I listed. I got so burned out on that type of music after the 90s ended because that's all I listened to back in that decade. These days I only pull that stuff out when I have gay friends over. In another 5 years or so, I'll probably be in the mood for those songs again.

I know what you're saying about techno, acid, trance, or whatever the hell it's called. It took the place of house but has none of the funkiness of it. It's definately not a good replacement for house.

Amazing how much that track has been mixed and remixed. The DJ is a modern day Wizard. I have some tracks in their natural form that have been remixed to hell and you could never tell if not for the lyrics it was the same song love

It sounds like they were inspired by Stevie Nicks' "Stand Back", which we all know was a Prince venture. That was 83 when that came out, this came out in 87. Prince clearly had a handle on New Wave. No doubt about it. However, his attempts at house music, surprisingly, have largely been mass fail. I always thought he had it in him to pull it off but nothing he's ever tried in that arena has ever passed muster.

OK, as I've been digging around, I see that Ellis D is in fact Jr. Vasquez! The crazy thing is I've been looking for this song (Dubbreak) for FOREVER and it has been mixed into certain things, the most obvious being Madonna's vogue but one time I saw it in a record store and didn't have money and when I went back for it, it was gone neutral Never found it since, in almost 20 years of searching bawl

Now it's on youtube, thank God so I can at least hear it but seeing it as "Ellis D" brings me to another point. The cover of the Record was "LSD".

Ellis D = LSD

doh! No damn wonder I could never find it! mad lol

I can't begin to described how completely MOVED I am by that video. There is grattitude, sadness, joy, love, sincerity, fellowship, brother/sisterhood and all in the form of dance music. I keep coming back to that video and I am struck each and every time.

I don't know if this was just a regular tribute or if he was sick at the time. Somewhere I read that Paris Hilton wouldn't help him in his time of need so maybe this was the time when he needed that help? Nobody deserves to die for expressing their sexuality and I'm happy that this man's legacy is documented and that he was part of something genuine, real and vital to the world of music and to the gay community. I have such respect for what happened on that stage... cry

I’m guessing he was sick at that time as he looks similar to another video I saw when he was ill. Was Paris Hilton connected to him? Did she say why she wouldn’t give money?

I never saw Paris is Burning. Been checking out the clips on youtube. What a fantastic documentary. I really don't want to turn this thread into a race war or disrespect anyone but you'd never see groups of white kids developing something like the balls and vogue dancing lol

Being of mixed heritage and growing up with mostly friends who weren't white, I'm happy I got to live in that world where so much is expressed. Not saying that white kids aren't able and capable but I look at my white friends when I came out vs my black and latin friends and the white kids were sometimes provincial in their expressions while the ethnic kids let all the shit hang the fuck out lol

I'm sure it's all relationsal thought because I grew up in cunty Orange County California. I stuck out like a sore thumb there lol

I saw a comment somewhere, I'm guessing in one of the youtube video comment section, where someone said they couldn't believe Paris Hilton wouldn't help him in his time of need. I can't find any information by google other than he taught her how to walk and pose.

One thing that sickens me about this society is that a person is reduced to begging in order to be helped. I'm guessing that was probably a fundraiser to help him pay for medical expenses or something like that. The only positive in living in a society where we don't truly care for each other is that others, as seen in that video, are given the chance to come together as one to help their fellow man. There is such righteousness and beauty in that.

I know what you mean and it is what it is. Sometimes I'm surprised it hasn't been bigger but there's obvious resistance to the culture. But I sort of like that it's stayed underground. If you can, you must rent it! It's quite fabulous and the music is great but a little sad too especially now.

Wow. If true, I can't imagine having the type of wealth she has and not helping someone particularly particularly for medical bills. Time and time again we see and hear about people struggling to pay for medical care and bills. There's something seriously wrong with this system. Very sad indeed. It's wonderful when we come together to help one another it's just a shame that it often happens when tragedy or illness strikes. neutral
