Sam Cooke's version is, IMO, still the best version. I would say Sananda/TTD, Otis, Anthony Hamilton, Al Green and Solo's covers are great too. Billy Preston & Aaron Neville both covered the song and their versions of "A Change Is Gonna Come" are worth checking out too

Beth Hart is amazing...

There are a few clips of her doing this song on YouTube.

I encourage everyone to give this woman a listen. She just may be the best singer on the planet. At the very least, she's one of the most under appreciated.

Phenomenal.

It's Sam's song. Plain and simple.

I never liked Otis's version. He trivialised it.

Jeff Beck featuring Beth Hart on vocals

Saw her during Jeff Beck's last U.S. tour:
http://www.prince.org/msg/8/203625

I was unsure how I was gonna feel about her covering some of the classic Rod Stewart vocal parts.
A bit screechy in parts but it turned out I wasn't as annoyed as I thought i'd be.
