Did the Sugarhill band replay "Good Times" for "Rapper's Delight"? I could've sworn I heard the sample of the string line that goes into the break of that song.

I know what part you mean, about 30 seconds in after the bassline begins but 4 bars before the rap starts. The whole song is definitely played by the in-house band which was really that group Wood Brass & Steel, but they didn't have a string section so I'm stuck on answering this. I don't know who played that part but it doesn't sound like the exact same string stab lifted from Chic to my ears.

Yep, that's why I'm thinking the string sound was a sample or an early variation of sampling in the then-new genre of hip-hop.

I thought the roots of sampling is when Dj's like Afrika Bambaata and Kool Keith started to spin 2 similar records on which they tape-marked particular parts they digged ? Yeah, that houseband was tight indeed. I wonder if the studio-technicians still had access to the instrumental mastertapes of "Good Times" ? ... or maybe they might've hired a string-orchestra after all

It's not that the genre was then-new.. it's about the technology being new.. the Fairlight was the first sampling synthesizer ever and that came out in 1979 at a very high price.. and I heard that no one in rap used it until Kurtis Blow in the 80s. I don't think Sugarhill ever had one. Sugar hill Gang never had a DJ so I can't imagine them recording a string stab straight to tape.

I don't think the mastertapes of "Good Times" were used. Their groove was just replayed.

I also heard that one of the dudes from Chic were mighty surprised when they walked into a club and first heard "Rappers Delight", so their cooperation/permission wasn't requested when it was made.

Sure wasn't. I remembered they threatened to sue Sylvia for usage of the song.

The sung tracks on Sugarhill Gang's first album are cool. That's what i always dug about the label...

You know I heard that the producer later known as D-Dot ("It's All About The Benjamins", "Hypnotize") actually made the beat for "I Got A Man" without credit or the producers for Positive K just created a beat using the exact same elements as D-Dot's.

very true. In relation to Dot and badboy entertainment, Puff Daddy went and beat K’s mouth in with a giant analog cell phone (the kind zack morris used to have in saved by the bell) in the middle of a club due to K owing puff some money.. Pretty much ended K’s label. [Edited 1/21/09 21:24pm] "Dead in the middle of Little Italy little did we know
