CES & Winter NAMM 2009

CES (Jan. 8 - 11):

Didn't get to the show floor as I was again stuck in a suite at The Venetian being forced to listen to a...

...$300K+ audio system the entire show. (I know, "Whoa is me.")

The interesting addition this year to the mostly digital gear...

...was a VPI Classic turntable to showcase a phone preamp.

This gave me the opportunity to check out some vinyl. The two that stood out were...

...the 2LP, 180 gram Morph The Cat & the 2LP, 180 gram, 45rpm version of Duke's Big 4 (w/Joe Pass, Ray Brown & Louie Bellson)

The other show highlight was running into Nina Hartley in the elevator. (for Old-Schoolers only)

One of many CES overviews here: http://ces.cnet.com/

Winter NAMM (Jan. 15 - 18):

Again, very few chances to check out gear.
I did get by the Boogie booth where my friend Doug West floored me with their new..

...Mark V

The amp combines the best features of the historic "Mark" series (I, IIC+, III & IV) along with some interesting "British" voicings.

Morris "Mr." Hayes gave a quick demo on the...

...Open Labs NeKo work center.

The other NAMM show benefit has always been the ability to have conversations with friends and musicians that I have great respect for.

A few that I got to hang out with this year.

...David Isaac

...Marcus Miller

...Stanley Clarke

...Victor Wooten

...Joey DeFrancesco

...Dr. Lonnie Smith

...Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste

...John Blackwell

...Phil Upchurch

...Paul Jackson Jr.

...Clarence McDonald

...David Blumberg

Composer/arranger David Blumberg worked for Motown over 11 years, on countless albums including three albums with the Jackson 5, worked with Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Barbra Streisand, Patti LaBelle, and is well known for arranging Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive;” orchestrator/arranger for Herbie Hancock on four films including the 1987 Oscar winner for music, “Round Midnight;” currently working on “American Idol,” documentary films and new chamber compositions.

...LP

LP talked me into checking out a set by a band (Nerve) featuring an amazing drummer...

...JoJo Mayer

Thanks for posting TA great read. I'd love to attend an event like that as a fellow musician. One of my friends on YouTube Brandon did go to NAMM 09, I think this clip adds nicely.

It's funny. I've done CES for so many years that i've seen the Adult Video section morph from being a part of CES to having their own independent thing.

They initially had space on the main floor. Because of complaints about the "visual" content (graphics & performers), they put a black shroud (with an attendant) at the entrance. Then they were banished to The Sands hotel.

The running joke was that if you couldn't find someone during the show, the pat response was, "Have you checked the Adult Video area?" smile

Currently their "convention" runs concurrently with CES at the Sands Expo section of The Venetian Hotel.
The Awards Show is done at Mandalay Bay.

No. I talked to Vernon at NAMM either Saturday or Sunday night.

LP is my best friend's son.
Formerly the drummer for Yellowcard and the original drummer for Tribal Disorder.

Sorry I missed him. That's OK. I got my Living Colour up date from Will. He says the next album will be out in June...before summer. Still I wanted to ask if he was recording a third Yohimbe Bros record with Logic.

He's a very talented fellow.
It's a shame that skilled musicians in this country are in one of music's "no respect" cycles.
"Fingers" is another musician who currently gets more appreciation (and subsequently paid work) in Europe and Japan.

Yeah, and that clip doesn't really do it justice.
I've got a feeling that there's a 4th Mesa Boogie amp in my future.

Oh yeah, I know Dave, and he's a great guy.

I didn't make it 2 NAMM this year... Some of my guys hung out with Sheila E at the Lennon bus performance.
