Remembering Aaliyah

Since it would be her birthday today if she were still with us, I just thought I'd throw up a thread in memory of her. She had an appeal that is hard to explain but easy to understand. She was one of those people who you wanted to see succeed. The industry really lost a jewel. She was a flower that we watched blossom right before our eyes and she also brings true meaning to the phrase "gone too soon". Its hard to see the good ones go.
Here's a few songs in memory.

Back and Forth

She was such a beautful girl. I still remember the 1st time I met her, in Sbarro's at Fairlane Mall. Back & Forth had only been out for a while and the mall was buzzing about her appearance. She was there with a girlfriend and seemed completely unfazed by the crowd that was beginning to gather at the entrance of the restaurant. We walked in, but had to assure the manager that we were there to eat smile After we got our food (thank God we had money), we walked past her table and said hello. She looked up at us and smiled and said hello back. She was wearing a black and white bandana folded around her head with the signature "locs" and overalls with black boots. I was too scared to ask for an autograph, but my friend was bold enough to go back and do it. She smiled politely and signed my friends receipt from sbarro's. My friend said that she was her biggest fan and Aaliyah smiled and said "Thank you so much, I appreciate all the support I receive from home" sigh

I encountered her several other times around the city. She never seemed conceited or uppity in any way.

What a sad loss. rose

Don't agree with the emoticons, cause she never made me sick, but yeah, not that talented, i think some folk want to mourn on the org just for the sake of it.

It's not like she changed the world or music in any way at all, she might have influenced folks not to pack so much make-up when flying, but that's it. not one memorable song. Truth be told, I remember her for being married to that piece of shit R.Kelly, and that's about it.
sad

Couldn't disagree more. Aaliyah's One in a Million was one of the most influential and important albums of the '90s. It was the first real success for both Timbaland and Missy, who are obviously two hugely influential forces in music. Later, "Are You That Somebody" was about as inescapable a summer anthem as we saw in the '90s. Her biggest hit "Try Again" was the first song to ever top the Hot 100 based solely on airplay.

SORRY, but who was this girl? Jesus? I admit, I never heard of her. I was a teenager in Germany but I'm sure even in Germany I COULD have heard of her, if she WOULD have done something good or important.
After I listened to some of her songs all I can say is:

She belongs to that one name female pop stars...
She doesn't have a decent voice/character/songwriting skills
Her songs are generic and boring

I can see when people celebrate John Lennon's birthday or date of death. He was part of the Beatles, the most successful (and influential) band ever. He was a top-notch songwriter who wrote some of pop music's best songs.
He had an interesting character,

But what did Aliyah? I wonder what would happen if Rihanna would die now. Would she be GOD?

Aaliyah wasn't really a pop star. She was huge at Urban radio for most of her career, and had just begun to cross over in the U.S. at the time of her death. She wasn't some global pop phenomenon and no one claimed such.

Aaliyah had a great voice to my ears, but to each his own. A "great" voice isn't key to touching people with your music, anyway - just ask Bob Dylan. She made some of the more interesting mainstream R&B records of the 90's and early 00's, and a lot of people think she would have gone on to bigger and better things. Hence why people were upset when she died. Unlike Lennon, she wasn't given the chance to mature.

I will never understand why people comment on artists they claim they "don't know" or "don't like". What's the sense?

People don't mourn her "for the sake of it". She has fans just like John Lennon . Their are people who like her and those who do not. The same can be said for Lennon.

I also don't understand people who start throwing around statements like "so you think she's GOD now?" or "Who is she? Jesus?". Um...no, we just liked her music and would like to remember her art. It's not that serious.

okay, i exagerated. I wanted to express that she did not shake the society with her personality and or her music. If she was THAT good, THAT important, THAT impressing she would have find her way even into my little room. I was not into MJ, the Beatles, Madonna and Prince but I have heard of them. And you know WHY!

Also I disagree, John Lennon had not the time to mature. He was only 40!!

You've heard of them because they were mainstream and successful - nothing more, nothing less. You are confusing popularity and prominence with artistic value and they are mutually exclusive. Please tell me where anyone claimed Aaliyah "shook society with her personality or her music"? This is an appreciation thread for the person and music that touched our lives in one way or another.

Also I disagree, John Lennon had not the time to mature. He was only 40!!

Compared to Aaliyah, who was in her early 20's at the time of her death, he had all the time in the world. That's my point.
