I like this song. I, like others here, hope the album is on the experimental side. I read it as equality is "No Line on the Horizon". [Edited 1/19/09 20:51pm] Since that is the name of the album you are probably right .

It certainly isn't an instant classic, but I do like the production and it's nice to have something new from them. A solid single. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

Anyone else agree that Bono is revisiting vocal melodies here that are way too familiar? I think his performance lets the song down - he needs to learn some new tricks soon. hmmm...when they try something new they get bashed. When they "do what they know" they get criticized. interesting... Based on the snippet, sounds like "Wild Wild West" by the Escape Club.

The only resemblance is the melody Bono sings during the verses. And the beat is kinda similar. Other than that, it's U2 for 2009. But you're not the only one saying that for sure. I think it's a great tune. Looking forward to the new album. Fantasy is reality in the world today. But I'll keep hangin in there, that is the only way.

I've been over U2 for a while, but I'm always interested in what they do since I like so much of their work and am always hoping something new sparks my interest.
It's like how I loved REM up through Automatic for the People and then basically ignored them and really wasn't passionate about their work, and then got back into them with last years' album.

i think that's how most people are with most artists. i haven't been excited about prince in years but i pay attention to what he puts out and, if i think its garbage, i leave it in the trash. i don't even own planet earth (in any format) and i cant remember the last time i pulled out 3121 or musicology (even though i think each record has a few above average tracks).
for me, though, u2 is one of two acts where i thoroughly enjoy every release (tori amos being the other). i haven't been disappointed with a U2 release since All That You Can't Leave Behind and that wasn't because i didn't like the work but, rather, was hoping for more Achtung-Zooropa-Pop styled work. I am really into this new track. it's pretty complex, lyrically and sonically...and i love it if for no other reason than the guitar during the "let me in the sound" bit...LOVE that! Well, when I first heard it, I could only hear Pump It Up, and Pump It Up & Wild Wild West are basically the same song. Apparently a local radio station has taken to playing the U2 track & Pump It Up back to back to point out how similar they are.

Yea and the "you don't know how beautiful you are" part as well as the "let me in the sound" part sound SO much like Pump It It and Wild Wild West. It's criminal. It really is. i dont know pump it up. but the verses do remind me of wild wild west, lol. but, really, of all the songs u2 are gonna sit around and think about intentionally ripping off, i dont think wild wild west is one that would pop into their mind. Wild Wild West came about 10 years after Pump It Up, and was widely noted as being a rip-off at that time. and pump it up was at the least highly informed by Subterranean Homesick Blues, so the whole thing's a bit of a fool's errand. I'm no muso, but I'd expect it's unavoidable that melodies are going to get unintentionally recycled every so often. This instance just jumps out to me because it really seems like the verses of the U2 song are identical to Costello’s, not just in melody, but in the cadence (if that's the proper word - like I said, I'm totally non-musical myself) of the vocalists. When they "do what they know" they get criticized. interesting... Well yeah, I guess that's true! I just think a lot of the experimental stuff they have tried has sounded forced, contrived... I mean, it sounds like they are trying to convince the audience that they can do new things, rather than do new things cos it comes naturally or whatever. Like "Hey, if we add a dance beat, people will see we aren't stuck in a rock rut!" rather than "Hey, this beat would work great with that song..." kind of thing. This is not an exit
