I've been over U2 for a while, but I'm always interested in what they do since I like so much of their work and am always hoping something new sparks my interest.

It's like how I loved REM up through Automatic for the People and then basically ignored them and really wasn't passionate about their work, and then got back into them with last years' album.

i think that's how most people are with most artists. i haven't been excited about prince in years but i pay attention to what he puts out and, if i think its garbage, i leave it in the trash. i don't even own planet earth (in any format) and i cant remember the last time i pulled out 3121 or musicology (even though i think each record has a few above average tracks).

for me, though, u2 is one of two acts where i thoroughly enjoy every release (tori amos being the other). i haven't been disappointed with a U2 release since All That You Can't Leave Behind and that wasn't because i didn't like the work but, rather, was hoping for more Achtung-Zooropa-Pop styled work.

I am really into this new track. it's pretty complex, lyrically and sonically...and i love it if for no other reason than the guitar during the "let me in the sound" bit...LOVE that!

Apparently a local radio station has taken to playing the U2 track & Pump It Up back to back to point out how similar they are.

i dont know pump it up. but the verses do remind me of wild wild west, lol. but, really, of all the songs u2 are gonna sit around and think about intentionally ripping off, i dont think wild wild west is one that would pop into their mind.

This instance just jumps out to me because it really seems like the verses of the U2 song are identical to Costello’s, not just in melody, but in the cadence (if that's the proper word - like I said, I'm totally non-musical myself) of the vocalists.

I just think a lot of the experimental stuff they have tried has sounded forced, contrived... I mean, it sounds like they are trying to convince the audience that they can do new things, rather than do new things cos it comes naturally or whatever. Like "Hey, if we add a dance beat, people will see we aren't stuck in a rock rut!" rather than "Hey, this beat would work great with that song..." kind of thing.
